Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), an international higher education rating agency, released the results of the world's university rankings for 2020. Many universities have fallen in rankings in many disciplines. Among them, the University of Hong Kong has been ranked in the "hardest hit area", and 21 of the 39 courses selected have fallen. The QS analysis indicates that it is related to "wide stagnation in regional development." It also indicates that although the ranking of Hong Kong universities has not improved this year, their performance is still leading in the world's top universities.

HKU Dentistry ranked fourth in the global disciplines, same as last year, but failed to reach the top three as before 2018. (Profile picture)

QS announces the ranking of world university disciplines in 2020, using four indicators, including academic reputation, employer reputation, number of citations per paper, and average academic productivity and influence, to compare and analyze more than 1,300 places in 83 regions around the world University courses covering a total of 48 disciplines.

HKU maintains fourth place in global dental rankings

Three local courses have entered the world's top ten, namely HKU Dentistry, which maintains the fourth place; followed by PolyU's Hospitality and Leisure Management, which ranked 7th in this discipline, down two places from last year; Hong Kong University's education dropped one Bit to 7th.

A total of 161 courses were selected from 9 local universities, and 76 of the top 50 subjects were selected. Compared with the Asian region, it was only lower than the Mainland (100); it was lower than Japan (72), South Korea (59), Singapore (58), Taiwan (11) and Malaysia (8) are higher. However, looking at the subject ranking performance of local universities this year, many subjects are showing signs of decline. The University of Hong Kong has become a "hardest hit area". QS describes the University of Hong Kong as "starting to regress."

University of Science and Technology dropped by at least 17 subjects and only 4 subjects dropped

Among the 48 subject rankings, 39 courses were selected by HKU, but more than half, or 21 rankings, fell, and only 7 subject rankings improved. Of the 37 subjects listed in the CUHK, 12 ranked lower, accounting for about 32%, and only 8 subjects improved. Among PolyU's 24 selected disciplines, one quarter is "dropped" and three subjects are "upgraded." Of the 17 subject rankings of HKUST, only 4 subjects fell, and another 7 subjects rose.

According to Ben Sowter, director of QS's research department, although the local top universities have not improved their rankings this year, according to the performance of the rankings, Hong Kong still leads the regional and global top universities, I believe. According to Ben Sowter, after adjusting for population size, no higher education system in Asia is comparable to Hong Kong in terms of the proportion of top courses; Hong Kong still outperforms its larger neighbors such as South Korea, Japan and India. He believes that the decline in the ranking of Hong Kong's disciplines is related to the stagnation of wider regional development.

The rankings of the world's best disciplines at many universities are showing signs of decline, and HKUST has less influence. Of the 17 ranked disciplines, only 4 have fallen. (Profile picture)

EdUHK: Higher Education Faces Unprecedented Challenges in the Past Years

The University of Hong Kong has always been committed to excellence in teaching, research and knowledge exchange. It is convinced that by implementing the future vision blueprint outlined by the University of Hong Kong, it is committed to becoming a world-class university in Asia and will further enhance the University's international reputation.

The CUHK has different scoring criteria and results for different rankings. It will continue to pursue excellence in teaching and research and contribute to Hong Kong, the Mainland and neighboring areas. PolyU believes that ranking cannot be used to measure the success of a university, and multiple factors must still be considered. The Conference aims to be a university that excels in professional education, cutting-edge technology research and partnerships, contributing to Hong Kong, the Mainland and the world.

According to the University of Science and Technology, university rankings have risen and fallen frequently, and universities are still delighted with the results. They will use the rankings as a reference, grasp improvements, continue to promote innovation and scientific research, and provide students with quality education.

EdUHK means that in the past year, Hong Kong's higher education community is facing unprecedented challenges. It is deeply encouraged and rejoiced that EdUHK has been reaffirmed in the global education rankings.
