(by Valentina Roncati) (ANSA) - ROME, MARCH 4 - Eight Italian university departments are among the top ten in the world, two more than last year. The new 2020 world university rankings developed as every year by QS Quacquarelli Symonds who studied 13,138 university programs in 1368 universities located in 83 locations around the world, show a strong Italian university system. Among the excellences of the country are the La Sapienza University - Department of History and Ancient History - which ranked second in the world; and the Politecnico di Milano, which is in VI place in the world for Art and Design and VII globally for Architecture. At European level, Italy ranks fourth as the best university system in Europe, surpassed only by France, the Netherlands and Germany as well as Switzerland (European but not part of the EU). However, looking at the performance in 4 different sectors - academic reputation, employability of graduates, impact on research and its productivity - it turns out that only the second parameter sees our country really strong in Europe, since Italy ranks at the second place, only surpassed by France. In short, our graduates like them very much for the preparation they have for employers who hire them but the numbers relating to the other three parameters see Italy lose positions.
"Overall, the trajectory of the Italian university is slightly downhill - explains Jack Moran, spokesman for Quaquarelli Sysmonds - is behind that of the other 26 EU countries. Of the 3013 university programs analyzed in the EU, the level is almost stable with 562 improved and 561 worsened while for Italy there are more downhill programs (86) than uphill ones (67) ". Globally, MIT, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is confirmed as a world leader in 12 subjects, more than any other country in the world; follows Harvard University in the lead on 11, and the University of Oxford on 8. But the United States' higher education system is in regression: the number of the top 50 programs offered by American universities has fallen from 806 in 2018 to 769 this year. By contrast, UK university programs have seen an overall improvement from year to year, with more increases (306) than decreases (238). "Brexit doesn't seem to have endangered the research performance of British universities yet," comments Ben Sowter, QS research director, who adds that "After five years of relentless improvement, our data tells us that there is a slowdown in China's progress. However, their trajectory is still greater than that of American universities. " The research attests that mainland China is registering the top 100 programs for the first time, although the improvement rate of its universities is slowing down; the National University of Singapore is Asia's best performing institution; Indian universities are starting to experience moderate improvements; Russia's higher education system has continued to improve; the overall best performing system in Latin America is Colombia.
