(CNN) - Italian luxury car brand Pininfarina celebrates its 90th birthday with a $ 2.9 million limited edition version of its Battista electric hypercar.

According to the company, the Anniversary Battista will be the most powerful Italian legal road car ever manufactured.

In fact, it will be so limited that only five copies will be built, all by hand.

Pininfarina will only build 150 copies of the Battista hypercar, including the five Anniversaries, and production will begin later in 2020.

The anniversary celebrates 90 years since Battista Farina established the Pininfarina coach design and construction house.

It was supposed to be presented at the Geneva Motor Show, but the event was canceled due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

"My grandfather always had the vision that one day there would be an independent range of cars with the Pininfarina brand," said Paolo Pininfarina, president of Pininfarina, at the company's headquarters near Turin, Italy.

"The Anniversary Battista, named in his honor to commemorate the 90 years of the carriage that began, is a glorious way to link our past with the future of motoring."

'Faster than many race cars'

Powered by four electric motors that generate 1,900 horsepower, the Anniversary has a faster maximum speed than the normal Battista, increasing to 217 mph (349 kilometers per hour).

The hypercar will accelerate from 0 to 300 km / h (186 mph) in less than 12 seconds, and will be faster than a current Formula 1 car in the two-second 0-100 km / h (62 mph) race.

The anniversary will also have a zero emission range of more than 498 km, the company says.

Each of the five cars will take several weeks to be hand painted by Pininfarina artists, since the body is disassembled and reassembled three times.

Formula One expilot Nick Heidfeld has been testing the Battista and is impressed by what he has seen.

“I have driven the fastest race and race cars in the world. I have never driven something as powerful as the Battista, ”said the 42-year-old.

“The Battista is faster than many racing cars, but it is not a pure racing machine. The ability to drive in all situations is its main focus. Now we will concentrate our time testing and developing Battista to deliver a car that is at the forefront of technological possibilities and innovation. ”

Pininfarina was bought by the Indian giant Mahindra Group in 2015 for US $ 185 million.
