Municipal in Paris: what are the words most used by candidates in their program?

2020-03-06T16:40:33.326Z

We looked at the words that come up most often in the projects of the eight town hall contenders. We find there, for each

What if, rather than reading an entire electoral program, we looked at the most recurring words? This is what we wanted to do for the eight candidates for the municipal elections in Paris, now that all their proposals are available in PDF on their sites.

We analyzed the terms that came up most often in relation to the total size of the text (which varies according to the projects). Of course, we had to start by excluding linking words, such as "le", "la", or "que". Once this manipulation done, one thing is common to the eight candidates: "Paris" and "city" come out on top. But the rest of the rankings reveal many peculiarities.

"Transport" for Hidalgo

The mayor of Paris, who is trying to capitalize on her action in traffic, is the only one for whom the word “transport” comes in the top 10 of the most recurring words, in fourth position. Anne Hidalgo notably mentions “public transport” and “transport of tomorrow”.

A double-edged sword for the mayor of Paris. If this has particularly pleased cyclists and environmentalists with the development of cycle paths, it is also criticized for the time lost in traffic jams, up last year due in particular to the work.

A “police” for Dati and Buzyn

What they have in common is that they want an armed municipal police force, which distinguishes them from Anne Hidalgo who does not want such equipment. Unsurprisingly, we therefore find the word “police” in the top 10 for Agnès Buzyn and Rachida Dati. Very often, it is attached to the word "municipal", which also appears in the words used by the candidate LREM. In particular, the latter wishes to "create a real municipal police force".

Dati and Campion insist on "security"

Rachida Dati very often mentions in her program “security”, which comes in third place. The candidate Les Républicains notably insists on several occasions wanting to "ensure security" or that everyone feels "safe". The only other candidate in whose program "security" goes back in the ten most used words is Marcel Campion, also very critical of Anne Hidalgo's record on the matter.

The "accommodation" for Danielle Simonnet

She is the only one who wants to ban Airbnb and she also plans to increase the number of social housing. "Housing" comes in the ten most used words by Danielle Simonnet (and only by her), precisely in fifth position. The elected often praises its proposals on "social housing" or to fight against "precarious housing".

Belliard wants "spaces"

The environmental candidate is distinguished by his willingness to speak of "spaces" and "space". They are most often "green", "public", "solidarity", "artistic creation or exhibition" or "free expression".

Dati and its "district"

The only arrondissement mayor, in this case the seventh, to stand in this election to become mayor of all of Paris, Rachida Dati is the only candidate in whom the word "arrondissement" appears in the ranking. Logically, it is very often preceded by "VII", especially in the passage "as I did in the 7th". The rest of the occurrences are used by the candidate to praise a measure that she wishes to make in "each arrondissement", based on her experience in the 7th.

Villani "wishes" many things, including "services"

It is more on form that Cédric Villani is original. Among the ten most recurrent words in his program, we very often find "service" and "services". This term is used in particular to present a proposal "in the service of fellow citizens" or to imply "city services".

The LREM candidate is also a fan of "wishes" and "also". It displays a lot of wishes and intentions: "I will also create", "it will also allow", etc.

Federbusch targets "Anne" "Hidalgo"

The RN candidate, Serge Federbusch, seems to make a slight obsession for the current mayor of Paris. He is the only one with "Anne" and "Hidalgo" in the ranking. And that is not to say good. The words attached to "Anne Hidalgo" are, for example, "accomplice", "not capable", "demagogic" or "failure".
