Golan's stance was backed by incessant talk of a fascist government and Aaron Barak's perception that Israel is on the path to Nazism, and the legal system is the brake lever. But the military by its very nature is a permanent threat to democracy. For four decades, the four senior officers have exploited the structural weakness of the security decision-making system. That summer, huge articles were published about the conflict, not to say the rift, between the military echelon and Prime Minister Netanyahu. The political conclusion was that only a movement led by former chiefs of staff, when Benny Gantz's name comes up in this context, can overthrow Netanyahu.
