Bernie Sanders Wins Democratic Primary in North Dakota

2020-03-11T13:07:53.417Z

Senator Bernie Sanders won the Democratic primary in the small state of North Dakota, according to US media projections on Wednesday. A small consolation after an election night largely dominated the day before by Joe Biden, his rival for the democratic nomination for the presidential election in November.

The former vice-president of Barack Obama has so far won at least four of the six states involved in this " mini-Super Tuesday ": Mississippi, Missouri, Idaho, but especially Michigan. Cradle of the automotive industry, this state of the Great Lakes region had unexpectedly swung in favor of Donald Trump during the presidential election of 2016 and is one of the key states for his re-election.

North Dakota allocates a small number of delegates (14) who will be distributed among the candidates in proportion to the votes won by those who have exceeded the 15% mark. The results of Washington State, the sixth state to vote on Tuesday, were still awaited. The scores were too tight Wednesday morning between Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders for the American media to risk projections.

Joe Biden is now the arch-favorite to win the Democratic nomination and face President Donald Trump, a candidate for a second term, on November 3. A majority of 1,991 delegates is required to be nominated as a Democratic candidate at the party convention to be held in July.
