2020-03-11T06:34:30.891Z

The seven main contenders argued this Tuesday evening for more than two and a half hours, five days before the election.

It was their second big televised debate, and it promised to be capital five days before the first round of the municipal elections. The seven main candidates for mayor of Paris met on Tuesday evening on the set of France 3 and France Info. For a little over two and a half hours, they debated a great many subjects, ranging from security to housing, including cleanliness and transport, six days after having participated in the same exercise on LCI.

No new proposal has really emerged but several invectives have taken place on certain subjects with candidates who cut themselves off.

For those who missed this second debate or who want a summary, we have listed the five highlights below. Note that the candidates qualified for the second round will meet for a last televised confrontation next Wednesday, this time on BFMTV.

This debate ends with the concluding minutes.

Dati in Hidalgo: "I am not your student"

Once again, it was the housing issue that quickly pitted Rachida Dati (LR) against the outgoing mayor. Accused regularly by her rivals of driving the middle classes from Paris, Anne Hidalgo challenged candidate LR. "I would like to ask Ms. Dati if she knows what is the average income of a household with two children living in the social park in Paris". "It ranges from 20,000 to 97,000 ..." "Average income per month? “, Insists Hidalgo. "It is above the national average," replied Dati before being interrupted by the outgoing mayor. "I'm giving you the figure since you don't know it ...". Annoyed, the candidate LR borrows a famous replica of François Mitterrand during a debate facing Valéry Giscard d'Estaing in 1981: "I am not your student".

"The average income is € 3,000 for a couple with two children", ends up launching Anne Hidalgo assuring that the social park is "mainly intended for the middle classes". " It's wrong ! "Concludes Dati.

Buzyn: "Frankly Ms. Hidalgo, your bikes ..."

The seven candidates also clashed over the sensitive issue of traffic in Paris. Agnès Buzyn wished to “restore order in the streets of Paris”, a personal “anecdote” experienced the same day at a Parisian crossroads in support. "I was at a crossroads, and I saw the archetype of what we live in Paris: two garbage trucks, one private and the other municipal, a delivery truck that couldn't get past , bikes falling on the roadway with scooters, […] and a bike hit by a taxi, ”she said, before saying:“ Frankly, Mrs. Hidalgo, your bikes at the same time as deliveries, as dump trucks… ”

Cédric Villani also denounced the "bazaar in the streets of Paris" and he took the opportunity to remind him of his desire to use artificial intelligence to smooth traffic in Paris.

Rachida Dati has repeatedly argued that there were "fewer cars, more traffic jams" in Paris, which the figures actually demonstrate.

Dati on alliances: "We are not in Koh-Lanta"

The subject of alliances between two towers has, on several occasions, raised the temperature to a plateau. Agnes Buzyn, who had indicated in particular that she was open to alliances on a case-by-case basis in certain districts, was notably questioned about a possible more general agreement with Rachida Dati. The latter, visibly annoyed, replied: "We are not in Koh-Lanta and to whom you are giving the immunity collar!" " "It is a denial of democracy," continued the candidate of the Republicans, reproaching her opponent for having "an aid station in case."

"If there are alliances in the second round, it would be on the basis of a project," defended the former Minister of Health, specifying in particular that he had points of "agreement" on "ecology with Cédric Villani and David Belliard ”. "I did not enter politics for this kind of bickering," lamented Cédric Villani as the tone rose.

Monopoly by Simonnet

Each of the seven candidates had to say which city they intended to take inspiration from. Rachida Dati and Serge Federbusch cited New York, because of the policy of the former republican mayor Rudolph Giuliani in the fight against insecurity. More classic, Cédric Villani and Anne Hidalgo chose Paris, the “City of Light”. Danielle Simonnet said she was inspired by Berlin and the rent freeze ... before releasing a set of Monopoly. "Paris is becoming a game of Monopoly, where lobbies, promoters, take our city as a playground," she said.

As for the environmentalist David Belliard, his choice of San Francisco was mocked by internet activists campaigning for LREM who spoke of the very high rents in the Californian city.

Dear @DavidBelliard @EELV_Paris I lived two years in San Francisco and the rents are at 1500 $ for 20 m². But indeed the city is magnificent ❤️❤️❤️ #ParisLeGrandDebat #TousAvecAgnesBuzyn

Buzyn changed his mind on school rhythms

Regarding the - very political - question of school rhythms, Agnès Buzyn is the only one to have indicated that she wants to return to the four-day school week, and this "as of the next school year". The candidate LREM admitted to having been "initially for the four and a half day week". She said that she had changed her mind because "on the ground, we do not find the animators qualified enough" to ensure extracurricular activities in the afternoons. The return to the week to four days "does not change anything for the parents, and allows for quality animators and better organization", she estimated, putting the cost of this change of pace at "between 10 and 15 million euros ”.

Rachida Dati wants to stay in school for four and a half days but is "demanding" on the quality of the activities offered to Parisian schoolchildren.

Belliard criticizes the Dati meeting in full coronavirus

Actuality obliges, the candidates had started their exchanges by approaching the health crisis of the coronavirus, whereas 33 people contaminated by Covid-19 have already died in France. Cédric Villani called to "stick together" (figuratively but also literally to greet each other) and to follow up and relay the measures put in place by the government.

But Rachida Dati did not appreciate that David Belliard accuses him of having maintained his meeting in Gaveau hall, Monday evening, when rallies of more than 1,000 people were now prohibited. "This is not the first time that David Belliard has made very personal attacks," protested candidate LR, denouncing "small attacks" that have "no sense". Rachida Dati recalled having finally welcomed only a little more than 900 activists (and in the presence of Nicolas Sarkozy), "in compliance with the recommendations and recommendations, without any difficulty".
