The number of people infected with the novel coronavirus Sars-CoV-2 continues to increase. While there are positive developments in China, the situation in Iran is getting worse.

  • New infections with the novel coronavirus Sars-CoV-2 continue to increase worldwide.
  • Iran is currently particularly affected - however, there is good news from other countries.
  • Numerous people around the world have become infected - we now speak of a pandemic .

Update 1:52 p.m .: The spread of the novel corona virus is dramatic in Iran . The authorities reported 611 deaths on Saturday afternoon. The number of officially recorded infections with Sars-CoV-2 rose in one day by 1365 to 12,729. If the figures are to be believed, the mortality rate in the country, which is also suffering from severe sanctions, is around five percent. This means that just over ten percent of the world's known deaths due to a coronavirus infection are reported in Iran (611 in Iran from 5,429 worldwide). Critics see a state failure in the corona crisis and speak of far higher infection numbers.

On Saturday, Iranian President Hassan Ruhani discussed with his advisers new instructions on how to deal with the corona crisis. Speculation revolved around the question of whether schools would reopen after the Persian New Year celebrations on April 2 or, as planned by the Ministry of Education, remain closed until May. Then the date of the entrance exams for the universities would be postponed. When the universities reopen remained unclear.

The possible closure of other facilities was also supposedly on the agenda. The focus was supposedly on the banks with 17 fatalities and hundreds of infected so far. The fire department is to disinfect all roads across the country.

The government wants to get the Corona problem under control by the end of the New Year holidays on April 2, which many find difficult to reach. With the help of the army, all 83 million Iranians are to be tested on Corona. According to army chief Mohammed Bagheri, the tests should be carried out over the Internet and by telephone and, in an emergency, personally at the place of residence. It remained unclear how the results will be evaluated. Since disinfectants and masks are still not sufficiently available in Iran, the initiative is in doubt.

According to Bagheri, the army also wants to ensure that the streets in the cities and the country roads become empty. However, the government itself is vehemently against nationwide quarantine because it fears an even greater panic in society.

Coronavirus: New infections in China are declining - over 100,000 cases worldwide

Original message from March 9, 2020:

Good news on Covid-19 comes from the People's Republic of China on Monday. The number of officially registered new infections with Sars-CoV-2 * has dropped to its lowest level since the publication of the numbers in January. Within a day, "only" 40 new cases of infection were found in mainland China, as reported by the government health committee in Beijing .

Coronavirus in China: number of new infections at its lowest since January

This means that the number of infected people in China is over 80,000, but the decline in new infections is still a good sign. Most of the new cases were registered in the central Chinese province of Hubei , where the virus first appeared *. The province, in which the city of Wuhan known by Covid-19 is located, was largely closed off by the Chinese government at the end of January in order to slow the spread of Sars-CoV-2 . The number of infected people worldwide is over 110,000. The search for a possible vaccine * will probably take longer.

The majority of the 22 new deaths were also recorded in Hubei. This increases the death toll in mainland China to 3,119, which is about 80 percent of the worldwide deaths caused by Sars-CoV-2 *. Here too, however, the downward trend of the past few days has continued. Eleven of the 16 hospitals that were provisionally set up in Wuhan have since been closed again and the number of recovered patients in the provincial capital rose to over 31,000 alone.

Corona virus: foreclosure of Hubei before the end? Figures also declining in South Korea

As a result of these developments, a Chinese government official has indicated that the closure of the province in central China could soon be ended. Government action affects approximately 56 million people.

Declining numbers regarding new infections with Sars-CoV-2 are also reported from South Korea, where the second most cases of infection were registered after China . There have been 248 cases of infection since Sunday, the lowest level in two weeks. In total, over 7,400 people in South Korea have been infected with Sars-CoV-2 . The official death toll is 51.

Less good news has come from Italy in the past few days, where the Sars-CoV-2 situation is coming to a head. Meanwhile, the search for “patient zero” continues. The trail allegedly leads to a Bavarian coronavirus patient.
