The king of Spain Felipe VI renounces the inheritance of his father, the former king Juan Carlos, and withdraws his endowment to him, announced Sunday evening the royal palace, on bottom of suspicions of corruption of the ex-sovereign. This announcement, which sounds like a thunderbolt in Spain, comes after several recent revelations from the international press.

The daily La Tribune de Genève notably affirmed that Juan Carlos had received, in 2008, 100 million dollars from the king of Saudi Arabia Abdallah on the account in Switzerland of a Panamanian foundation. And the daily The Daily Telegraph said for its part that Felipe VI was a beneficiary of this foundation.

In the press release from the royal palace, Felipe VI said that he had signified last April before a notary that he wanted to accept " no profit or participation in this entity ". Felipe VI also assures that he " completely ignores to this day his supposed designation as beneficiary " of another foundation which, according to the press, has financed millions of euros in private jet flights for Juan Carlos.

Juan Carlos I reigned 40 years in Spain, where he had acceded to the throne after the death of the dictator Francisco Franco in 1975. He will go down in history in particular for having favored the transition from dictatorship to democracy in 1977 and then stopped a putsch military in 1981. But he had to abdicate in June 2014 in favor of his son, against a backdrop of scandals.

Barely enthroned, Felipe VI, had distanced himself from trying to restore the tarnished image of the monarchy, while the press was already criticizing the escapades of Juan Carlos - who had gone to hunt the elephant in Africa in the company of his mistress. era, Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein - but also her links with the Gulf monarchies and the opacity of her fortune.
