Bavarian CSU scores points against Greens

The municipal elections in this Land in the south of the country marked a comeback for the Conservatives against the environmentalists.

In times of health crisis, the color green is no longer popular in Germany. The environmentalist party Die Grünen, however tipped to accede to the Chancellery in 2021, registered underperformances during the municipal poll which took place Sunday in the region of Bavaria, where 40,000 terms were subject to renewal. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, voter turnout increased compared to 2014, enabled by the development of postal voting and the implementation of drastic security measures at polling stations. This mobilization, up nine points (58.7%), first benefited the two parties that have shaped national political life for decades: the social democrats of the SPD and the social Christians of the CSU, the small Bavarian brother party from Angela Merkel's CDU.
