From 08:00 local time, vehicles from France, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark and Luxembourg began to be checked by German police, who only let goods transport and cross-border workers through and instructed to drive back other travelers.

At the same time, France has also announced a similar measure: it will strengthen controls at its border with Germany and "limit border crossings to the bare minimum", according to the Minister of the Interior. Both the French and German authorities insisted that it was "not a complete closure" and that the decision had been "concerted" between the two countries.
