New coronavirus advances in stopped Spain

The coronavirus epidemic continued to progress Monday in a shutdown Spain with nearly 1,500 new cases in 24 hours and the government has warned that the confinement of 46 million inhabitants could last.

The number of confirmed cases has risen to 9,191 cases including 309 deaths, said the Ministry of Health. Between Saturday and Sunday 2000 new cases had been detected and a hundred additional deaths had been recorded. The Madrid region is the most affected with 4165 cases, more than half of the national total. In the most pessimistic scenario, the number of infections "will continue to climb for at least ten days, " said Fernando Simon, head of the national health alert center.

In order to curb the spread of the virus, Spain has declared a state of alert and has gone into solitary confinement. Spaniards are only allowed to leave their homes for imperative reasons such as going to work (if teleworking is impossible), going to the pharmacy, getting treatment or buying food. The country is at a standstill, all non-essential shops being closed, as are schools, administrations, museums ... Soldiers have been deployed in 14 cities to help clean up or enforce traffic restrictions . Transport Minister José Luis Abalos has warned that the state of alert, initially declared for 15 days, will surely be prolonged, which will require the approval of Parliament where the left government can count on the support of the opposition conservative.

The Madrid Stock Exchange, like the other world places, was experiencing a new black Monday, losing more than 9% to 6022 points around 14.35 GMT. Owing to the lack of spare parts, the manufacturers Renault, Seat and Nissan have suspended the activity of their Spanish factories, as well as the tire manufacturer Michelin. PSA (Peugeot, Citroen, Opel) also announced the shutdown of its factories, in Spain as in the rest of Europe. The impact was also felt on political life: the Basque Country (north) postponed the regional elections scheduled for April 5 and Galicia (west) was to do the same.
