"Millions of Iranians could die from coronary disease," a senior medical commentator on state TV, Dr. Afroz Islamic, from the prestigious Sharif University in Tehran said Tuesday.

Afroz claimed that if the Iranian public fails to cooperate with the restrictions imposed on him in the fight against the spread of the virus, four million citizens of the country could be infected with the disease, and three and a half million could die. "Our medical facilities are insufficient for such patients, and millions will die as a result," Islami said.

Dr. Islami said this in light of videos released in recent days where crowds across Iran are violating restrictions on pilgrimage to various mosques and religious sites, with a view to praying for their health. Images have also been posted of believers kissing and licking lintels and handrails on the sacred sites, in order to show their religious piety and belief in the protection provided by Islam.

Iran's spiritual leader Ayatollah Khamenei issued a ruling yesterday requiring citizens to heed the government's instructions to the health authorities and avoid unnecessary travel. This is a rare step by the supreme leader, and the ruling went beyond the reach of Iran's history.

Meanwhile, Dr. Rick Brennan, director of the World Health Organization's emergency services, today, after a visit to Iran, claimed that the number of people infected and dead as a result of the country's corona virus is five times higher than the official figure provided by the government.

"The weakest link in the Iranian emergency apparatus is the ability to collect data," Brennan told Reuters. "They increase their test capacity over time, and then we'll see how the official number of patients climbs."

The official death toll in the country currently stands at 998, with close to 15,00 people cured. But evidence of excavation of graves and various reports from the local media indicates that there are far higher casualties.
