Vienna (dpa) - The Zillertal has called on its guests to watch out for possible symptoms of a coronavirus infection. Anyone who had recently been there and stayed in après-ski bars and bars should "closely monitor their health", said a message from the popular Austrian winter sports region.
The Zillertal with its extensive ski slopes is located in the state of Tyrol, which has now been completely quarantined. It is believed that many snow tourists from Germany and Scandinavia, among others, brought the virus from their winter vacation to their home countries. Austrian ski huts are also often places of work for foreign seasonal workers.
The accommodations in the Zillertal have already gone through their reservation lists in order to inform guests who have recently been there. At the weekend, the authorities made the additional appeal to people who had visited bars and restaurants in Mayrhofen, Gerlos, Zell am Ziller and Aschau-Kaltenbach between March 8 and 15.
According to the Ministry of Health, the number of confirmed Covid 19 cases in Tyrol was 626 on Sunday (March 22) - around a fifth of the cases reported in Austria. The regional government in Innsbruck received criticism for reacting too slowly to the outbreak and the impending spread of the virus before ski resorts were closed and the region was quarantined on March 15.
