Thirty deaths with severe respiratory failure after mixing chlorine with dry water

A thirtieth girl died in Al-Basel Hospital in Qardah with severe respiratory failure due to inhaling toxic fumes caused by mixing chlorine with javel water in order to sterilize and clean her house.

Dr. Suhail Makhlouf, director of Al-Basel Hospital in Qardaha, explained to Sana that a 34-year-old girl had reviewed the hospital with a complaint of severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, blue skin, and pupils expansion, where the necessary first aid was done by placing her on an automatic respirator, but she died within less than an hour.

Makhlouf stated that the girl mixed chlorine with dry water to clean and sterilize her house, causing her vapors to poison her at first with symptoms of fatigue, fatigue and shortness of breath, and subsequently assisted the hospital, but she arrived in a bad condition, which led to her death.

The hospital director warned of what he called "unjust sterilization", indicating that excessive use of sterilizers that contain chemicals and mixing them unconsciously leads to respiratory problems that may end in death.

Makhlouf said that chlorine is mixed exclusively with water at a rate of one quarter or half a liter. Chlorine for 20 liters of water is sufficient to sterilize the home and ensure the safety of the family, indicating that fear of transmission of the Corona virus infection may cause unhealthy behaviors that warrant attention and spread awareness.

Makhlouf indicated that the hospital is ready to receive people with respiratory diseases and problems and to conduct all necessary investigations to determine the condition and provide them with appropriate treatment.
