(CNN Spanish) - Rafael Nadal and Pau Gasol have launched a campaign with the Red Cross to collect $ 12 million to help combat the coronavirus pandemic.

Through social networks, both athletes, who have given great glory to Spanish sport, have said that it is time to repay the support for their followers.

The 19-time Grand Slam tournament champion said that the idea came up with his friend and NBA star, Gasol, to make the request for help among other athletes.

The initiative is to support the "Red Cross Responds" campaign of the Spanish entity. The purpose of this is to acquire protection equipment and infrastructure that are at the service of vulnerable families in the country affected by the virus.

Nadal said: "We are suffering the impact of a pandemic that has changed the lives of everyone and, above all, of those who are living it directly."

Nadal and Gasol confirmed that they had already made their respective donations. The two-time NBA champion thanked the health professionals and sentenced his message with a very motivating phrase.

At least 4,089 people have died of coronaviruses in the country with a total of 56,188 registered cases, according to data from the Spanish Ministry of Health published on Thursday, March 26.
