The coronavirus pandemic has killed 345 people in the United States in the past 24 hours, according to a count released Friday by Johns Hopkins University. A record which brings the balance sheet in the country to 1475 dead.
The United States, now the first number of officially declared cases in the world (97,028), also recorded nearly 18,000 cases in one day.
A peak expected at best mid-April in New York
The World Health Organization is concerned that the country and its nearly 330 million people may become the next epicenter of the pandemic. "Stay at home, relax," Donald Trump asked the Americans from the White House.
The majority of the deaths are so far recorded in New York State, which has become the center of the American epidemic. Its governor, Andrew Cuomo predicts a peak of contaminations in about 21 days, around April 17.
In terms of equipment, masks, gloves, artificial respirators, New York State seeks to accumulate sufficient stock to meet the needs associated with a peak.
For Diana Torres, a nurse at one of Mount Sinai hospitals in Manhattan, medical teams are not currently receiving the necessary protective equipment. "So you put plastic on top to make it last longer," she says. "It really is the bare minimum."
