Israel launched strikes against Hamas in the Gaza Strip late Friday evening in response to a rocket fire earlier in the day from the Palestinian enclave that had resulted in the shelter of the population, a said the Israeli army.
A security source in Gaza confirmed several Israeli strikes on a Hamas base near Beit Lahia, in the northern Gaza Strip, without reporting any injuries.
It is the first such attack since clashes in late February between Israel and the Islamic Jihad, the second largest Palestinian armed Islamist group after Hamas, in the Palestinian enclave under Israeli blockade.
"A rocket has just been fired from Gaza towards Israeli civilians in southern Israel," the Israeli military wrote on its Twitter account.
No injuries were reported in the immediate future. The military did not provide further details, but according to Israeli media reports, the rocket landed on vacant land.
This attack comes against a backdrop of severe movement restrictions on the Israeli population in order to combat the spread of the new coronavirus.
In late February, the Islamic Jihad fired more than 80 rockets into Israel after the Israeli army killed a fighter in the group accused of attempting to place an explosive device near the fence separating Israel from the Gaza Strip.
