In March 2020 it will be daylight saving time again. When and why do the clocks have to be changed even though millions of people voted against it?

  • At the end of March the clocks have to be changed again.
  • The clock change has still not been abolished - although millions of people have already voted against it.
  • Will the clock be moved forward or back in March ? We clarify.

Munich - And again, it will be an hour less: In March 2020 , the daylight saving time will change again. The change in time is happening to EU citizens twice a year, even though millions of them voted in summer 2018 to do away with summer and winter time. On Sunday, March 29th, the time will come again, then the time will be set at 2:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. Changing the time to daylight saving time shortens Sunday by one hour.

In 2018, the EU Commission asked citizens for their opinion on the abolition of the time change and received a record-breaking 4.6 million responses, three million came from Germany alone - there the subject seemed to be particularly moving. With a clear majority, EU citizens voted for the abolition of the clock change - in Germany it was 84 percent of those surveyed.

Time change in March 2020: Daylight saving time soon all year round?

The EU Parliament also voted in March 2019 to abolish the time change by 2021 . However, this period may also be too ambitious. A key problem: the EU countries do not agree on what time should apply afterwards - summer or winter time . After all, ideally, the same time should apply across borders, otherwise there is a risk of a patchwork of time zones in the EU . After all, EU citizens agreed on the vote in 2018. Of the 4.6 million who voted, three million wanted to keep daylight saving time . All of this currently means that on March 29, 2020 there will definitely be a daylight saving time changeover.

The German Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine, on the other hand, is in favor of maintaining winter time . The blue portion of sunlight, which functions as the "clock generator" for the inner human clock and is therefore important for the wake-sleep rhythm , is particularly relevant for the human clock. The switch back to winter time is generally easier for most people to put up with, since a sleep deficit is avoided.

Turn clocks forwards or backwards - donkey bridges help before changing the time to summer time

Back in summer and back in winter , or what was it like? Twice a year, shortly before the time change, the question regularly arises: Is an hour stolen or is there a free gift? If the clocks are switched to summer time , this always happens at night from 2 to 3 o'clock. When switching from winter to summer time - this year on Sunday, March 29, 2020 - the clocks will be advanced one hour. In winter - this year on Sunday, October 25, 2020 - then back one hour.

The following guidelines can help you to finally remember when what applies:

  • Tables and chairs are placed in front of the house in spring and back in autumn .
  • Rule 2-3: In spring, the clocks are set from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m., in autumn from 3 a.m. to 2 a.m.
  • Summer is something positive for most, so the watch is introduced. In the less popular, "negative" winter, they are put on hold.
