Berlin (dpa) - Children from poorer families are more likely to have poorer health and are more often affected by developmental delays, psychological problems or being overweight.

For example, boys between the ages of seven and ten, of whom neither parent works full-time, have a worse general health status than their peers with at least one full-time parent. Children and adolescents with low social status also have an increased risk of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) - according to the data, 2.8 to 4.4 times.

This shows the response of the Federal Government to the German press agency in Berlin to a request from the FDP in the Bundestag. The government compiled various study results in its response.

Preventive dental examinations also affect children and adolescents much less often. Children and adolescents from parental homes with a low socio-economic status also have less healthy eating habits. They drink sugary soft drinks significantly more often than their peers.

The social policy spokesman for the FDP faction, Pascal Kober, who made the request, calls for greater attention to be given to everyday reality in socially disadvantaged milieus. "Demands for a higher Hartz IV standard rate or an unconditional basic income fall short." Doubts are appropriate "that the aid of the welfare state financed with billions does not reach the people early enough". Aid should therefore be given a more preventive approach.

Kober called for a comprehensive children's opportunities package. "This should include a significant increase in the education and participation package." In particular, grants for sports clubs and music lessons should be doubled from 15 to 30 euros. "Sports and music make children strong in many areas, from body awareness to language skills, from perseverance to the ability to concentrate."
