Wrong time, missing or refused citizen information and a solution that does not seem feasible. In the turnaround in flood protection for Erding, the water management office did pretty much everything that can be done wrong, says editor-in-chief Hans Moritz in his commentary on the weekend.

The experience of the city of Erding with the water management office is anything but good. And there is no end in sight. What the agency did on Friday is a strong piece that once again raises doubts about its reliability.

After the flood disaster in 2013, the office had to admit sheepishly that the danger posed by Sempt was completely underestimated. How comforting.

After that, three variants were quickly on the table. That was probably thanks to the then responsible minister for the environment - Ulrike Scharf. For years, the focus was on a large retention basin near Niederwörth. It is completely legitimate that the neighbors from Wörth protested against it. But there was usually a good inter-communal relationship.

Then the water management office afforded the next serious faux pas. The authority had to admit that it had completely miscalculated the dimensions of the retention basin. This is how you win trust. The dam should have been a monster structure now. No wonder the grant rose in Wörth.

The water management office gave hope for a hybrid variant with a (smaller) pool and a few walls along the Sempt in Altenerding and Langengeisling. Now everything is different again: Walls and dams should straighten it out in Erding.

You don't need a lot of imagination to realize that a river cannot be walled in completely. There are open flanks everywhere. It would be ugly structures that would ruin the city.

The agency's communication is no less bad. She sends her message in the middle of the corona crisis, where everyone has more important things to do. You could have waited for them with confidence. Head of department Christian Leeb's advice that the pandemic cannot be used to clarify the public for the time being is mockery. The virus will go away, the anger remains in Erding. This flood will hit Leeb tremendously.
