Moscow (AP) - Russia is stepping up its efforts in the fight against the corona pandemic. All shopping centers, restaurants and larger parks in Moscow have been closed for at least one week since Saturday.

There has been no such thing since the end of World War II. There were fewer people traveling in the largest city in Europe than usual on buses, subways and on the streets. Nevertheless, in spring-like weather, many people were drawn to the fresh air.

The representative of the World Health Organization in Russia, Melita Vujnovic, complained to the state agency Tass that many people are not at least two meters apart: "I just drove through Moscow, and the sight hurts."

According to the government, the border will be completely sealed off next Monday. This applies to all crossings for pedestrians, cars, trains or anyone who wants to enter Russia by ship or boat. How long this was valid was not disclosed. Parts of the border have long been closed, for example to China.

There are still comparatively few corona cases in Russia, but the number is increasing rapidly: on Saturday, more than 1264 infected people were officially registered. Seven people died, three on Saturday alone. Against the spread of the virus, specialists disinfected many sidewalks and streets in the capital. There are most cases of illness in the metropolis.

In the fight against the highly contagious disease, the Russians will be sent on a seven-day forced vacation from Monday. In addition, there are no more flights and train connections abroad. Therefore, around 600 Russians stranded in Ukraine were brought to Moscow on a special train on Saturday. The state agency Ria Novosti, citing sources, announced that it was now considering to temporarily stop all flights and trains in the largest country on earth.
