  • The corona virus * paralyzes life in Germany.
  • The number of infected people is increasing.
  • In the meantime, federal states take in infected people from Italy and France.
  • Here you will find the basic facts about the corona virus. You can also find current case numbers in Germany as a map. The following recommendations for Corona protective measures are currently available.

Update, 9:15 p.m .: At a G20 summit and at European level, states voted on Thursday on joint measures against the corona crisis. Angela Merkel reports on the results in a video statement on Thursday evening.

Update, 8.30 p.m .: Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn has now made gloomy forecasts for the future of the corona virus in Germany. We are currently in the "calm before the storm". There is also disagreement among the experts.

Update, 8:08 pm: Germany wants to take in more seriously ill Corona patients from Italy . The Federal Foreign Office reported on Thursday evening (March 26) on Twitter of commitments from various federal states to treat 47 intensive care patients. Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) wrote under the Italian flag: "We stand by our friends." Participants include clinics in North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Hesse and Berlin.

Corona in Germany: Markus Söder with video message

Update, 19:55: The Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder addressed the citizens with a video message on Twitter. The cohesion in the Corona crisis is impressive, said Söder. The exit restrictions would still have to be observed so reliably that the measures could take effect. "Let's continue on the path we have chosen together," Söder writes.

Corona in Germany: Spahn with a somber assessment - "It's still the calm before the storm"

Update 4:47 pm: To date, more than 41,300 infections with the new corona virus have been registered in Germany. This emerges from an evaluation of the German Press Agency, which takes into account the reported numbers of the federal states. North Rhine-Westphalia has particularly high numbers with more than 10,800 proven cases, Bavaria with more than 8800 cases and Baden-Württemberg with more than 7200 cases. With 87.7, Hamburg has the highest number of infections per 100,000 inhabitants.

To date, more than 230 people infected with Sars-CoV-2 have died nationwide. According to the Robert Koch Institute, two other Germans died during a trip to Egypt.

Update 3:25 pm: In the government, initial planning is ongoing for the period after the Corona standstill. For the time being, however, Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) does not expect the situation to calm down. "Nobody can say exactly what will come in the next few weeks," said Spahn in a press conference on Thursday. It was still necessary to increase the number of intensive care beds - and to slow down the spread of the virus. Whether the previous measures have had an effect can only be adequately assessed in the coming weeks.

"At the present time, it is not yet possible to make a definite statement whether the dynamic of infection has weakened," said the President of the Robert Koch Institute, Lothar Wieler. "Some cities and counties have managed to get larger outbreak events under control." These outbreaks occurred in part in connection with festivals or trips. "I don't understand why celebrations are still celebrated," said Wieler.

Corona in Germany: Spahn with a somber assessment - "It's still the calm before the storm"

Update 1:44 p.m .: Health Minister Jens Spahn praised the German healthcare system in a press conference on Thursday. The laboratory capacities and the competence of the specialists are professional and better in the field of laboratory diagnostics than in all other countries.

In an emotional appeal, Federal President Fank-Walter Steinmeier called on citizens to persevere in the Corona crisis. The waiver is tough - but there may still be a great opportunity in it.

Update 1:23 pm: Health Minister Jens Spahn warns of information about rapid tests , from China and other countries. All of these tests would be tested. "These tests are not specific enough," said Spahn. So far, the error rate has been too strong. As soon as there was a good rapid test, this would also be used.

Spahn also warns to refrain from exaggerated expectations as to the decline in the number of new infections. The government's drastic measures had only been in place for three days. Spahn asks that the two-week period be observed to assess the situation.

Update 1:03 p.m .: Andreas Gassen, CEO of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians , emphasizes that only those who show symptoms and who can also show a justified test should be tested. This is based on the recommendations of the Robert Koch Institute. In the morning, virologist Christian Drosten had talked about possible prospects for comprehensive testing.

Update 12:56: The head of the Robert Koch Institute, Lothar Wieler, turns to the population with a warning. "Young people can also become infected with the Coronaviurs ", they could also die from the consequences of the infection, said Wieler. Everyone must adhere to the guidelines. There is no other way to limit the epidemic.

The death rate varies widely in Germany. A lot of new cases would be reported, said Wieler, but "some cities and municipalities have already managed to control major outbreaks." Currently, the national average is 4.87 percent.

Corona in Germany: Spahn with a somber assessment - "It's still the calm before the storm"

Update 12.50 p.m .: Politics is in crisis mode, health minister Jens Spahn said at the press conference on Thursday. Citizens would have to pass a tough test. Doctors and nurses are under the greatest strain since the Second World War. And: "We have many infected people and complain about many deaths, but that is still the calm before the storm." The coronavirus continues to spread. That is why there is an urgent need to increase capacity in hospitals.

Update 11.43 a.m .: Virologist Christian Drosten again emphasizes that diagnostics in Germany is very advanced compared to most other countries. About half a million PCR tests could have been carried out in Germany because the testing of individual cases would not do justice to the situation in the long run. "Laboratory medicine in Germany is very close to handicrafts," said Drosten. This would enable laboratory physicians in the federal states to set up the corona tests themselves. The university hospitals could have carried out corona tests before the end of January. "We are on the one hand with the supply as well as with the research at the university hospitals where everything is currently happening," said Drosten.

Corona mass test: "Strength must be planned well"

In future, entire population groups could also be tested in Germany - at least retrospectively. "There are initiatives all over Germany that deal with this," said Drosten. But such a feat should be well planned. Antibody tests can then also be used to analyze who has already completed the corona infection. The first companies could already produce these antibody tests. Such a program would have to be preceded by several weeks of planning and testing. "We will suddenly get a lot of data in this direction in the period after Easter," said Drosten. Then you could also assess whether there could be comprehensive testing.

Update 11.25 a.m .: With the exception of corona patients, the clinics currently only have the task of ensuring the necessary medical care. "We are currently only doing 50 percent of the interventions," explains Heyo Kroemer, Charité CEO.

This is to ensure that medical care is ensured even with many corona infections . It was possible to double the available intensive care beds by reducing them to non-postponable treatments. "We mobilize all available forces and have to be careful not to lose sight of the research." This task is made extremely easy by the task force.

Corona crisis: press conference on the current situation

Update 11.08 a.m .: The chief virologist of the Berlin Charité Christian Drosten , Federal Research Minister Anja Karliczek and the Charité CEO Heyo Kroemer present the current situation in a press conference.

Minister of Research Karliczek begins with a bitter assessment: "The pandemic has presented Germany with the greatest challenge since the Second World War." The greatest burden falls on hospitals. That is why - on the advice of the Federal Chancellor - a new research alliance had been developed. "We need the most effective concepts to support the sick people."

The minister is thus setting up a national task force to facilitate cooperation between university medicine and politics. One wants to constantly exchange ideas in a short way. "A close link between science and politics" should help "to create processes in clinics that ensure optimal care for Covid 19 patients".

Update 9.42 a.m .: In itself, the question should be easy to answer: money or life? Nevertheless, the corona crisis forces German politics to weigh up. Depending on whether the fear of the virus outweighs the fear of the economic consequences. Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer has now made it clear: Economic interests should not override the protection of human lives.

"Restoring functionality to the point of accepting many dead or sick people who are healed but have permanent damage is out of the question for me," said Seehofer of the Süddeutsche Zeitung , demanding discipline, at least until Easter. He was not available for such a measure: "Not with me," he emphasized.

A virologist currently offers a different approach - he offers a perspective on how life could normalize again in the corona crisis - and names a bitter price.

Corona in Germany: 200 deaths confirmed - Germans more pessimistic than in a long time

Update of March 26, 2020, 6:42 am: According to a survey, the corona crisis makes Germans more pessimistic than any other event since the Federal Republic of Germany was founded in 1949. Only 24 percent are hopeful about the next twelve months, like the one on Thursday published survey of the Allensbach Institute on behalf of the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" revealed.

In the seven decades in which the institute regularly asked questions about the future prospects in the Federal Republic, this value has never been so low - neither after the building of the wall in 1961, during the two oil crises in the 1970s, nor after the attacks on September 11, 2001. The Allensbach demoscopes had determined the lowest "hope level" so far at 27 percent in 1950 at the beginning of the Korean War.

According to the institute's findings, no other event, like the corona crisis, has changed citizens' assessment of the economic situation so dramatically within such a short time. At the end of February, a majority expected the economy to remain stable over the next six months. At the beginning of March, the proportion of those who feared a downturn had already risen from 28 to 59 percent. Now this value is more than 70 percent.

The proportion of respondents who considered the excitement about the new virus to be exaggerated and hysterical fell from 29 to 17 percent in the Allensbach surveys from the beginning to the middle of March.

Corona in Germany: 200 deaths confirmed - Robert Koch Institute with a strong recommendation

Update, 8.50 p.m .: The corona virus is spreading more and more in Germany . Now the death toll of 200 people in Germany has been exceeded for the first time. 206 deaths have been reported so far, an increase of 47 compared to the previous day. Added to this is the number of 37,000 infected people in the Federal Republic, the fifth highest measured number of infected people worldwide.

Meanwhile, Markus Söder commented on the current situation on television - a doctor showed shocking prognosis on the program.

There are no further news regarding the current contact restrictions in Germany and their duration. However, the Federal Chancellery, Helge Braun, recently revealed what the first step towards easing the rules could look like in the future. " Young people who do not belong to the risk groups" should therefore probably be the first to go back on the street, he said in a question video of the yodel app, which is popular with students. At the same time, however, Germany had to “test consistently, find the infected and track their contacts,” said Helge Braun.

When the police wanted to stop the celebration, which according to the picture had taken place behind the shutters in a bar , several people were apparently hiding from the emergency services.

As Bild reports further, party participants are said to have hidden in the basement and in washrooms. A 39-year-old is said to have been taken into custody afterwards, apparently offering resistance .

Corona virus in Germany: first death in Bremen

Update at 13:59: The state of Bremen has reported the first death from a corona infection. The health authorities said on Wednesday that it was a 76-year-old man who had several previous illnesses.

Update at 1:13 p.m .: After it was announced the previous day that a delivery of six million protective masks for German hospitals to an airport in Kenya had been lost , the Ministry of Defense has rejected reports of the Bundeswehr participating in the loss of these masks. "No masks have been lost from the Bundeswehr inventory," said a spokesman on Wednesday at the federal press conference.

Coronavirus in Germany: Ministry of Defense comments on protective mask breakdown

For the reports that the material had disappeared in Kenya over the weekend, he referred to the Directorate General of Customs . The latter ordered the material in cooperation with the Bundeswehr procurement office. Now the delivery route will be tracked . "Since the delivery was not made, no payment was made," said the spokesman.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Health did not provide any information on the exact total number of masks ordered in the meantime. "The market is extremely competitive," he emphasized. On Tuesday and Wednesday alone, about a million FFP2 stage respirators were delivered. The distribution would then be the responsibility of the federal states or the statutory health insurance associations.

Update at 12.37 p.m .: Another German politician has been infected with the corona virus: Hanover's Mayor Belit Onay has tested positive for Covid-19 . The green politician had symptoms of illness late Monday evening, the city administration said on Wednesday. He is now in office quarantine until April 6th. And there are now two corona deaths in the Bavarian capital, Munich.

Corona virus in Germany: Caritas raises the alarm - men cough up residents

Given the rapidly increasing number of cases in Germany and the rest of the world, everyone should have understood the seriousness of the situation by now. Unfortunately, this is still not the case in reality. There are reports of incidents in which people intentionally violate current measures to contain the epidemic . From group meetings to deliberately coughing up others to corona parties, there are numerous violations that the police are currently dealing with.

One case is particularly drastic: As RTL reports, four young people between the ages of 19 and 22 were said to have stood in a parking lot in Oberhausen at night from Monday to Tuesday - without observing the minimum distance. When residents pointed out the ban on contact, things got even braver: the young people started to cough and made fun of themselves. The fun had a quick end for them: the police called fines. Everyone involved now has a complaint against the neck, it is said.

The police are therefore required to do a lot to enforce the regulations applicable in the individual federal states. In the meantime, the federal states have largely taken measures - most recently Baden-Württemberg last Monday.

Update at 12.01: In Koblenz (Rhineland-Palatinate) , a 78-year-old resident of an institution for the mentally handicapped died of the consequences of a corona infection. According to the charity Caritas, there is “a dramatic situation” in the house and in a sister facility nearby. Focus.de reports that there are several corona infections in both buildings for residents and employees. As a spokesman for the Mayen-Koblenz district administration announced on Wednesday, the 78-year-old died on Tuesday.

Coronavirus in Germany: representatives from the health sector call for measures

Meanwhile, dozens of healthcare organizations have requested specific action from the federal government to mitigate the scale of the corona epidemic. In an open letter, the representatives expressed their deep concern that hundreds of thousands in Germany do not have sufficient opportunities to be tested and treated, or to be quarantined. Among others, the German Parity Welfare Association and Diakonie Deutschland are among the signatories of the letter.

Update at 11.42 a.m .: The RKI is still reluctant to evaluate the measures to contain the coronavirus epidemic . "We have to wait further to see whether the measures work, " said institute director Wieler in Berlin on Wednesday. As early as Monday, he had spoken of an apparent trend that the exponential growth curve flattened out somewhat. He did not want to evaluate this development two days ago. At today's press conference, he repeatedly pointed out that the number of reported cases continues to increase.

Meanwhile, there is worrying news from the British royal family: Prince Charles is apparently infected with the corona virus. The 71-year-old immediately went into self-isolation.

Coronavirus in Germany: Wieler fears the epidemic will last for weeks

Update at 10.37 a.m .: At the RKI press conference , head Lothar Wieler also had to ask numerous questions about the national measures against the corona epidemic . Wieler is currently unable to say how far the number of new infections will have to decrease so that measures such as the ban on contacts and the exit restriction are lifted.

"There is no one-size- fits-all recipe , we will keep adapting the measures," he announced. He also predicted that the epidemic would be in Germany for a few more weeks . Given the ongoing exceptional situation, Wieler called for discipline. "Every citizen can do something about the spread of the epidemic," he emphasized.

Corona virus in Germany: RKI boss wants more systematic tests

When asked whether Corona rapid tests are already being used in Germany, Wieler replied: "There are already some quick tests, but the quality of the quick tests that I am familiar with is not sufficient." These tests are certainly necessary and the test capacities should also be started up. But the worst thing you could do is test with tests that are not qualified. "Too many symptom-free people are still being tested," criticized Wieler. "I hope that testing will be more systematic and coordinated."

Update at 10:24 a.m .: "We have to wait further to see whether the measures take effect, " said Wieler at the press conference on the spread of coronavirus. He also pointed out that he was often asked why the death rate in Germany was comparatively low. "We don't exactly know why we have low death rates compared to other countries in Germany," Wieler admitted. "But to put it very clearly: this is not an underrecognition ." In Germany, the pathogen was discovered early, and tests had been carried out from the start. This would also cover many mild cases. In addition, not so many old people are ill in Germany yet.

Coronavirus in Germany: "We are at the beginning of the epidemic," warned Wieler

"We are at the beginning of the epidemic, " Wieler emphasized again afterwards. "It is still completely open how the epidemic develops and, of course, the number of deaths is also increasing in Germany." Wieler also explicitly sent a clear warning to the younger population . "Younger and healthy people can also get very serious from Covid-19 and there are also younger and healthy people who die from Covid-19, " said the RKI boss. He admitted that this rarely happens. "But it can happen, we know from cases from our neighboring countries," he emphasized.

Update at 10.14 a.m .: RKI boss Wieler further informed that an estimated at least 5,600 people with Covid 19 sufferers in Germany have recovered . 38 coronavirus infections per 100,000 inhabitants are currently known throughout the Federal Republic. However, this incidence varies from region to region. The people affected by a Covid 19 infection in Germany are on average 45 years old , the people who died as a result of the lung disease have an average age of 81 years . In addition, men are still affected by the virus a little more often . 55 percent of the sick are male, 45 percent female.

Coronavirus in Germany: According to the RKI currently 31,554 infections and 149 deaths

Update at 10.07 a.m .: According to the latest figures from the RKI, there are currently 31,554 people infected with the coronavirus in Germany. This is 4118 more cases compared to the previous day. In addition, 149 people died from the consequences of the lung disease Covid-19 , which is an additional 35 people compared to the previous day. "This is the situation that is based on official reporting figures, not on estimates or estimates," emphasized Wieler.

Update at 10 a.m .: Lothar Wieler, head of the Robert Koch Institute, will present the current numbers of coronavirus infections and deaths in Germany at today's press conference of the institute. After he had already made the first court openings at the press conference on Monday that the curve could possibly flatten out, today's statement is eagerly awaited.

Update at 9.45 a.m .: The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has changed its recommendations regarding corona tests . As became known on Wednesday morning, the institute now recommends corona tests for almost everyone. The scientists therefore advocate that high-risk patients should be tested regardless of the severity of their illness . If there is "sufficient test capacity", the same applies to people who do not belong to a known risk group. In addition, doctors, nurses and other health care workers should be tested in the future if they have acute symptoms of a respiratory disease.

Corona virus in Germany: RKI adjusts recommendations for corona tests

The RKI has adapted its so-called "orientation aid for doctors" accordingly. As a result, contact with Covid 19 patients or staying in a risk area is no longer decisive for whether a person is tested or not. The severity of the symptoms is now irrelevant . Many of the laboratories criticized the resulting “broad testing” on Tuesday. According to a report in the medical newspaper, the chairman of the professional association for accredited medical laboratories in Michael Müller emphasized: "Only if we as doctors use all resources appropriately in this phase will we get through the pandemic well." Laboratory capacities should not be exhausted unnecessarily .

Update from March 25th, 6.45 a.m .: The number of coronavirus infections and fatalities increased again slightly on Wednesday night. The number of deaths rose from 156 to 159 , according to information from Johns Hopkins University. The number of infected climbed to 32,991 . But more and more people could also be healed. The number of people who recovered increased to 3,290 people on Wednesday night.

Corona virus in Germany: situation in intensive care units still relatively relaxed

In the meantime, the situation in the German intensive care units is still relaxed overall, according to information from intensive care physicians and the German Hospital Society (DKG), although it differs from region to region . The President of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI) said to the German Press Agency: “At the moment it is still possible. We are beginning to feel that more patients with Covid 19 disease are coming in. ”However, these are not necessarily all seriously ill. "There are actually many older people with the classic clinical picture, fever, pneumonia." The situation is also very different regionally.

The German Society for Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI) also agrees. Smaller hospitals would have fewer and often individual patients, said Gernot Marx, spokesman for the DGAI intensive medicine working group and chief physician of the intensive care medicine clinic at the University Hospital Aachen. "The big wave of critically ill people will still come , estimated in eight to ten days." It is difficult to say exactly when the climax can be expected.

Update of March 24, 7:35 p.m .: The city of Frankfurt am Main wants to act against hamster purchases with the help of a general order that came into force on Monday. Now only commercially available quantities may be sold to the citizens in the shops of the Hessian metropolis.

Corona crisis: Frankfurt declares war on hamster purchases

Toilet paper, flour and hygiene articles are often sold out all over Germany, since the articles have been disproportionately high on the goods conveyor belts in the past few days. In addition, the number of people who are allowed to stay in shops is limited. More than one shopping cart per person is also no longer allowed.

The city of Frankfurt has banned hamster purchases by general decree. Sensible, moderate, effective - that's how it works.

- Meat cheese (@Oberbruddler) March 24, 2020

As Frankfurt Mayor Peter Feldmann (SPD) explains, almost all of the residents behaved exemplary, “but we keep hearing about cases in which a few are unsound, insult other customers and sometimes even the employees in the shops if they enforce normal household quantities want."

Corona crisis: Frankfurt against hamster purchases - dealers face high fines

The situation should now improve with the new regulation. Head of Health, Stefan Majer , said: "With the general decree, we have a hand against hamstering toilet paper, flour or other everyday goods." According to the picture, fines of up to 25,000 euros should be possible for violators. However, it is not the buyer but the dealer who is responsible for the violation. The rules apply immediately until at least April 19 .

Meanwhile, another coronavirus death * was reported in Munich.

Corona crisis: 11,000 people apply for the Robert Koch Institute

Update from March 24, 4:44 pm: A job advertisement as a support worker at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has met with immense interest. Between Thursday and Monday, 11,000 people applied to help fight the corona virus, the Federal Office of Administration (BVA) said in Cologne . The office had advertised the position for the RKI.

"We have never seen such a rush for advertised positions," said BVA President Christoph Verenkotte.

It will be the task of the supporters to help as "containment scouts" in the coming six months to interview Covid-19 infected people and their contact persons by telephone. This saves the RKI resources that it urgently needs in the fight against the virus.

Corona crisis: VW sends thousands in short-time work

Update from March 24, 4:20 pm: At Volkswagen , around 80,000 employees in Germany should go on short-time work due to the delivery problems and weak sales in the Corona crisis. This was announced on Tuesday from corporate circles. The company has temporarily closed the German and European plants as well as other locations in America and Russia.

Coronavirus: Medic Retired To Help - Now He Is Dead

Update from March 24, 4.10 p.m .: On Monday there was a tragic emergency response in North Rhine-Westphalia , as the Neue Westfälische reports.

A retired doctor had collapsed in the central corona smear in Herford and died in hospital despite attempts at resuscitation. The cause of death has so far not been clarified, as the district of Herford announced. However, the man probably died of a heart attack. The doctor volunteered to help in the corona smear .

"The employees of the smear office and the entire district mourn for the committed doctor," said the city of Herford.

Coronavirus: Over 30,000 infected in Germany - Italian Covid 19 patients in Saxony

Corona in Germany: Six million protective masks disappeared without a trace

There was a serious glitch in the purchase of urgently needed protective masks by the Bundeswehr .

In Kenya, six million respirators ordered have "been lost," a spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of Defense told AFP on Tuesday. In doing so, she confirmed a report by Spiegel . The ministry is trying to clarify "what happened there," said the spokeswoman. Originally, the masks were supposed to arrive in Germany last Friday.

The federal government was "not harmed by the loss because the masks have not yet been delivered and have not yet been paid for," she stressed. "The contract is hereby void." At first she could not say what role Kenya played in the procurement of the masks

In Germany, doctors and clinics urgently need supplies of respirators because of the spread of the coronavirus.

Corona in Germany: Italian and French Covid-19 patients

Two seriously ill patients were brought to Saxony on Tuesday by an Italian Air Force plane. Baden-Württemberg also shows solidarity. According to the Ministry of Science, four university clinics there agreed to accept patients from the neighboring and severely affected area of Alsace in France .

French President Emmanuel Macron thanked Twitter for cross-border support for other countries in the fight against coronavirus spread. "Many thanks to our European neighbors," Macron wrote on Monday in the social network with a view to the admission offers for French emergency patients. Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, Switzerland and Luxembourg had previously offered to admit patients.
