Unfortunately, the mistake "has only come to light after all the election letters have been sent and some of them have already decreased," writes election manager Christine Pettinger, who assumes responsibility for it. "In the hustle and bustle around Corona and the preparation of the election with changed conditions and the short-term necessary material and personnel procurement, I did not check the ballot with the appropriate care. I would like to apologize publicly for this. "
Do not correct wrong name!
Pettinger asks the voters who have not yet voted: "Please tick your candidate as usual and do not change anything on the ballot paper so that we can conduct the mayoral run-off vote regularly." This means: Do not correct the misspelled first name or even cross out.
When asked, Pettinger explains: "If someone has written text on the ballot, it is - for whatever reason - an illegal addition." The ballot would then be invalid. However, if someone, for example, drew an arrow at the two letters to indicate that they were twisted, the ballot paper had to be dealt with by decision, but it was generally valid. "It depends on the design," says Pettinger.
Each marked ballot is checked separately
She announces: "We will examine each ballot paper that is marked differently in any form in the polling station after the election has been completed to determine whether the vote can be considered valid."
