Local elections 2020 in the Schongau region: All mayor candidates at a glance

This much is certain even before the 2020 local elections: Many new faces will appear in the town halls and municipal councils in Schongauer Land and Lechrain after March 15th. Several mayors announce their farewell:

Albert Hadersbeck (Altenstadt), Michael Asam (Peiting), Georg Epple (Apfeldorf), Xaver Fichtl (Ingenried), Helmut Angl (Lechbruck), Herbert Sieber (Prem), Margit Horner-Spindler (Reichling), Quirin Krötz (Rott), Siegfried Neumann (Schwabsoien) and Xaver Wörle (Steingaden).

In other municipalities such as the city of Schongau or the municipalities of Burggen and Bernbeuren, the incumbents want to defend their executive chairs in the town hall. In municipalities such as Rottenbuch, Böbing, Hohenpeißenberg or Schwabbruck, the ruling mayors compete without candidates. You can find the latest news about the election in the news ticker for the district of Weilheim-Schongau. You can also read all information about Bavaria * in general and Munich * in our election tickers .

But what many voters do not know: If there are not enough candidates in a municipality for the number of posts to be filled, voters can also put candidates on the lists on election day that do not run themselves. In the last local elections in 2014, for example, Martin Klein did not apply for the Wildsteiger top office - nevertheless he received almost 34 percent of the vote as a “phantom candidate” for the office of mayor. In the 2020 municipal election, he officially competes for Mayor Josef Taffertshofer.

In fact, in municipal elections, people who do not appear on the ballot can also become mayors. This happened about six years ago in the municipality of Schwaigen (Garmisch-Partenkirchen district): Hubert Mangold was so popular that 55 citizens spontaneously wrote him on their ballot papers and sent him to the runoff. The incumbent mayor Karl Schwarzberger had not even received half of the votes in the first ballot - even though he was the only candidate.

Mayoral elections 2020 in the Schongau region: when will there be a runoff election?

If none of the candidates for mayor, mayor or district administrator gets more than 50 percent in the first ballot, there will be a runoff vote on March 29 between the two leaders. So the two candidates who got the most votes in the first ballot.

This means that run-off elections appear to be particularly likely in municipalities where there are three or more candidates for the executive chair in the town hall.

The date for the run-off elections is determined by the right to vote: this must always take place on the second Sunday after the local election. The results of the election in Schongau can be found together with those for Weilheim in the result text for Weilheim-Schongau.

By the way: We offer you our cheat sheet for the local election in Bavaria 2020 as a PDF for download and printing

Schongau:

Unsurprisingly , Mayor Falk Sluyterman (in office since 2014) is back for the SPD in Schongau . The CSU initially made it exciting and then conjured up district spokesman Hans Rehbehn. When almost no one expected it, a third candidate joined on November 21. The ALS Schongau sends the entrepreneur Daniela Puzzovio into the race in the 2020 local elections.

On our overview page you can find out more about the candidates for mayor in the 2020 municipal election in Schongau. In this article we have put together an overview of the municipal elections in Weilheim.

Peiting:

It is certainly one of the most exciting decisions in the district: Five candidates are applying in Peiting to succeed the outgoing mayor Michael Asam (SPD, in office since 1996):

Peter Ostenrieder (CSU), Thomas Elste (Greens), Annette Luckner (SPD), Andreas Schmid (Citizens' Association) and Christian Lory (Independent Peitinger).

For the local council and head of marketing at Raiffeisenbank Pfaffenwinkel, "good neighborhood" is particularly important.

Konstantinos Papamichail is convinced that the mayor of Altenstadt will be able to advance. The SPD candidate has plenty of political experience. He has been represented on the local council since 2014 and has been the spokesman for the parliamentary group ever since.

Bernbeuren:

Martin Hinterbrandner (in office since 2014) had long considered whether he would play again after the defeat at the electoral assembly of the Independent Voting Party Bernbeuren (UWG). The town hall boss is now trying his luck as an SPD candidate.

Josef Köpf surprisingly prevailed against the incumbent mayor Martin Hinterbrandner at the UWG line-up meeting. The insurance clerk is a member of the Bernbeuren municipal council.

Karl Schleich tries a second time in Bernbeuren after he was just inferior to incumbent Hinterbrandner in the last local election. The Case Manager competes for the voting community Lebendiges Bernbeuren .

Markus Bader is only in his mid-thirties and is in May before his second term as mayor in Rottenbuch . The free electorate Rottenbuch-Schönberg nominated the incumbent (since 2014). He doesn't have an opposing candidate.

Josef Taffertshofer only announced in November that he would like to apply again for the mayor's office in Wildsteig . The list of voters nominated the 59-year-old farmer, who has been in office since 2002.

Reichling

Mayor Margit Horner-Spindler (in office since 2008) is no longer running for the 2020 mayoral election in Reichling. As a result, the executive chair in the town hall has to be replaced. Three candidates apply for their succession.

Alfons Schelkle competes in the mayoral election for the Reichling village community. The master carpenter is a municipal councilor, born and raised in Reichling. He was the fire brigade commander for twelve years.

Hohenfurch

Guntram Vogelsgesang goes unrivaled in the mayoral election in Hohenfurch. The incumbent councilor is aiming for his third term. The other parties and groups have not nominated any candidates.

The mayor Xaver Fichtl has ruled the Ingenried community since 1990. The 64-year-old, who has been the town hall manager for almost half his life, will no longer stand in the 2020 local elections. His successor will be elected on March 15th.
