Update, March 27: On March 29, run-off elections in several municipalities in the district. All results, news and reactions can be read here live in the election ticker for the Garmisch-Partenkirchen region.

Six years ago, Anton Speer - at that time managing district administrator - had a somewhat surprising election to the district administrator against CSU heavyweight Dr. Michael Rapp - then Mayor of Murnau - won. There will be no rematch between the two. A new candidacy was “not an issue at all” for him, the CSU district chairman Rapp said in May 2019 when the Christian Socialists presented their district administrator candidate: the JU district chief Florian Lempert, just half the age of the incumbent. But ambitious and confident enough that he dares to take the chair in the district office. And then there is the third party: FDP chief André Göllrich, who was already running for the district parliament in 2018. These are the three candidates.

Local elections 2020: What are the tasks of the district administrator?

Incumbent: Anton Speer, the candidate for free voters

Anton Speer is the first district administrator that the free voters provide in the history of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district. Before he was elected to the executive level of the district office, he worked as a sales manager at the Ettal show dairy and as a part-time farmer. He was also known throughout the district as a wedding loader. Speer can look back on a long experience in local politics: he was a member of the Unterammergau municipal council for 24 years. In 2008 he was elected by the CSU and FDP as deputy to the then district administrator Harald Kühn (CSU), who was elected to the Maximilianeum as a member of the state parliament in late 2013. With which Speer served as managing district administrator for a good half a year until the end of his term.

This exposed position must have helped him to win the CSU candidate Dr. Defeat Michael Rapp. And clearly with a majority of 60.14 percent. A little political sensation then. In the past six years, the affable spear has not made a gross mistake. On the contrary: He is considered hardworking (70-hour week) and tries to be present on as many appointments as possible. Equipped with the incumbent's bonus, it will be difficult for the challengers to lift him off the saddle.

District council candidate of the CSU: Florian Lempert, district chairman of the Junge Union

District chairman of the Junge Union and, at the age of 31, a candidate for the district administrator: Florian Lempert from Seehausen, who runs the property management and construction company with his family, is a political high-flyer. Although he avoids any appearance in his candidate video, he is striving for a political career. "Because I want to change something", he summarizes his motivation to run for the office of district administrator. He has never held a municipal political office. Doesn't matter, he emphasized in his presentation: "I'm bringing a breath of fresh air and new concepts." When the CSU was looking for a candidate for a district administrator, there was apparently no competitor for Lempert in the corresponding meetings of the district board. Were everyone else afraid to throw their hat against spear in the ring? In any case, he did not see himself as a candidate for counting, emphasized the CSU man at his introduction.

And so Lempert also relies on social networks in the election campaign - an area with which incumbent Speer has not had much to do so far. Lempert got relevant tips from the election team of the Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, whom he met personally. Shortly became head of government of the Alpine Republic at the age of 31. Why shouldn't Florian Lempert also be a district administrator at this young age? In the network, he positions himself primarily on the topics of agriculture, environmental protection, affordable housing and transport. And you can reach many voters directly with their messages via social networks.

With André Göllrich, the FDP is also sending its district chairman into the race for the district office. He already has experience with election campaigns: in 2018 he ran for the district council, but did not make it into the move. He also relied on social networks in the election campaign and eagerly posted on his Facebook account.

The film and television scientist works in the civil service in Saxony. Before that, he worked for television, including as production manager at WDR, before moving to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. He acts as a lawyer for volunteers. He is also committed to protecting the climate. As he emphasized during a panel discussion in the Catholic parish home in Oberammergau, he does not want to build any further ski slopes. He also advocates promoting regional trade and the economy.
