The epidemic of new crown pneumonia continues to spread globally. The Chinese embassy in Peru recently confirmed that a Hong Kong person was diagnosed with new crown pneumonia during a trip to Peru, causing death from cardiac arrest. As of noon yesterday, the Immigration Department had received 86 Hong Kong residents stranded in Peru for help.

Citizen Party Legislative Councillor Tan Wenhao cited today (30th) local stranded Hong Kong residents as saying that after receiving an email from the Immigration Department, the government is arranging charter flights to take them back to Hong Kong, but no timetable or other details have been provided. He believes that the Hong Kong Government may be because some Hong Kong people have died locally and under pressure to speed up action.

BNO holders can take British charter flights

Peru announced a state of emergency starting on the 16th of this month, and closed the sea, land and air passenger transport borders. As a result, a large number of passengers were stranded, including Hong Kong people.

Tan Wenhao pointed out that the United Kingdom has arranged charter flights to take British citizens to London today (30th) local time. Hong Kong people holding BNO passports can also board and leave before leaving. He believes that if the Hong Kong Government has plans to send charter flights to withdraw stranded Hong Kong residents, it should inform the stranded people of the departure date of chartered flights as soon as possible so that they have room to decide whether to take a charter flight from the United Kingdom or wait for a charter flight arranged by the Hong Kong Government.

Kwai Tsing District Councillor Zhou Weixiong revealed that his friend who was stranded in Peru received a notice from the Hong Kong Immigration Department that the government had "scheduled" charter flights, but there was no firm timetable. He said that as far as he knew from the Immigration Department, the Hong Kong government is currently communicating with the Peruvian government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, "because it is at the level of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is beyond the SAR's control." It is unknown whether the Hong Kong government will send local charter flights to pick up Hong Kong people, or follow Chinese charter flights to evacuate with other Chinese diasporas.

At present, 86 Hong Kong people are stranded in Peru. Zhou Weixiong said that about 20 or 30 of them had BNO passports and could follow charter flights arranged by the UK. He said that the British charter flights will not pick up all Hong Kong people holding BNO passports at one time and need to be carried out in batches. The first batch of people can leave Peru as early as today or tomorrow.

Tan Wenhao said yesterday (29th) that more than 80 Hong Kong people were stranded in Peru for help, involving two tour groups, mainly in the local Cusco and Lima. He pointed out that unless the Hong Kong government coordinated with the local area, charter flights could not be sent to rescue local Hong Kong people. He criticized the government for "Buddha-based rescue" in the past week and did not reach out to help Hong Kong people stranded everywhere.
