The South Pacific archipelago has just started a four-week containment phase to stop the spread of the new coronavirus. New Zealanders are called to stay at home, and to keep two meters apart if they leave their home.
New Zealand police chief Mike Bush said the dedicated site, launched on Sunday afternoon, had been visited so much that it had temporarily crashed. " We have received 4,200 reports from people believing that others are not respecting " the confinement rules, said Bush. “ It shows how determined New Zealanders are to have everyone follow the guidelines. "
Among the reported offenses was a party gathering around sixty people in a backpacker hostel in Queenstown, a very touristy town on the South Island, but also several cases of travelers continuing their camping car trip despite the imperative containment.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern also encouraged her compatriots to use the site, in particular to denounce the stores that would inflate prices.
New Zealand, which has a population of approximately five million, has documented 552 confirmed cases of Covid-19, including one person who died from it.
