IDF Rehabilitation and Maintenance Center Converted to Corona Fighting Equipment Manufacturing Center in 12 Hours • Center Commander, Col. Udi Amira: "We are Fighting Against an Invisible Enemy"
The IDF Rehabilitation and Maintenance Center is known to every armor. His men are responsible for building the army carriage and armored tanks, along with the construction of UAVs, vehicle upgrades, communications systems and electronics. However, in recent days they have been grinding their swords and turning their production lines in favor of Israel's No. 1 enemy - the Corona virus.
"Like the rest of the people of Israel, we realized that we were now fighting against an invisible enemy, so we decided to fire them for the fight against the Corona epidemic," says MCO commander Col. Udi Amira. They soon converted upholstery to a factory in Tel Hashomer, where they manufactured up to four days ago for tank chairs, in order to create goggles for medical teams. "Within 12 hours, we turned the whole work program around," he notes. In the past few days, they produce 1,400 goggles every day.
This is not the only initiative of the technology division's enterprises. In Haifa's car factory, workers have opened a line where they protect ambulances from Corona, creating a hermetic wall between the cab and where the patients are.
"We created a wall, an insulated separation wall, so they couldn't go through things that could hurt the team," Amira adds.
There are currently two shifts in NIS, and they are preparing to move to three shifts to respond to forces in the field. There are other ventures going on today, including an initiative by an engineering team trying to create respiratory kits from medical products located in one of the factories.
