The epidemic of new-type COVID-19 coronavirus pneumonia continued, and the number of confirmed cases in Hong Kong continued to rise. The negative-pressure ward of the hospital became full. The Hospital Authority opened 400 beds this week as "second-line isolation wards." However, what is the difference between "first-line isolation ward" and "second-line isolation ward"? "Hong Kong 01" compiles the current data and explains the similarities and differences between Hong Kong and China in terms of ward specifications, facilities, ward accommodation standards and numbers.

Ward specifications

The "first-line isolation ward" and "second-line isolation ward" are negative pressure wards, that is, the air that is drawn into the hospital corridor and enters the ward, and the virus-containing air in the ward passes through the high-performance air particle filter (HEPA ) Clean the indoor air so that the filtered clean air is exhausted outdoors.

The number of air changes per hour in the negative-pressure ward is 12 times, which means that the air changes every 5 minutes on average, which is higher than that in ordinary wards, where only 4 to 6 air changes per hour. The higher the air exchange volume, the higher the air dilution will be, and the dirt can be taken away more quickly.

However, the "First Line Isolation Ward" was originally built to isolate patients and is permanent; however, the "Second Line Isolation Ward" is generally converted from an ordinary ward.

2. Ward facilities

The design of the "Second Line Isolation Ward" is not independent, with more beds. Taking the United Hospital as an example, the second line isolation ward has 6 cells and can provide 26 beds. At the same time, because the second-line isolation ward is converted from an ordinary ward, it does not fully meet the standard, that is, not every door has two doors. Therefore, medical staff must wear a full set of protective equipment in every corner of the ward, including N95 masks, full-face masks, gloves, and protective clothing, etc., to prevent infection; however, the "front-line isolation ward" has two doors and is a free-standing design.

3. Standard aspects of ward accommodation

The "First Line Isolation Ward" is specially designed for newly diagnosed patients with a higher disease volume, while most of the first line wards only accommodate one patient;

Eligible patients in the "Second Line Isolation Ward" have 5 criteria: no fever for 48 hours, no need for ventilator assistance, new progress in blood tests, no symptoms for more than 10 days, and no upper respiratory infections And diarrhea, and this type of ward can accommodate a large number of people.
