South Korea is seen as an example in the fight against the coronavirus, but the country is still seeing a steady change in increasing and decreasing numbers in new cases of infection.

Seoul (dpa) - The number of new infections with the coronavirus registered in South Korea has risen to more than 100 again.

On Monday, 125 cases were added, the health authorities said. So far, 9786 people have been tested positive for the Sars CoV-2 pathogen. The number of deaths related to the virus rose by four to 162.

For days now, South Korea has seen a constant change in increasing and decreasing numbers of new infections. The authorities continue to worry about local clustering of infections and an increasing number of "imported" cases. Vice-Minister of Health Kim Gang Lip said that the "expanded social distance campaign" helped the number to stabilize at around 100. But he warned that South Korea could experience a second wave of infection in the communities if the campaign was not continued strictly.

In order to reduce the risk of infection due to imported cases from abroad, all arrivals are to be placed in a two-week quarantine from Wednesday. The stricter entry regulations had recently been extended to Europe and the USA. Many South Koreans are returning for fear of infection in countries that are experiencing rapid spread of the virus.

The majority of new infections were again found in the southeastern city of Daegu, which is the focus of the outbreak in South Korea. In March, since the peak in late February, there had been a clear downward trend with over 900 cases within one day.
