The Dachau Clinic faces immense challenges during the Corona crisis. Now, of all things, you stop at the end of the month. Was the Helios Group not considering holding you for a while?

I made my decision some time ago to switch to Catholic Youth Welfare Augsburg as Medical Director. At a time when the corona virus was not an issue in Europe.

Her successor Florian Aschbrenner, who will be managing director from April 1, knows neither the staff nor the specific processes in the house. So should there be a hurry when it comes to familiarization?

I am very happy that the Helios group was able to make such a smooth transition possible. Especially in times of the corona pandemic, it is important that a leader is at the top of the Amper clinics. My successor Florian Aschbrenner is not just an experienced clinic manager. Because of his more than three years as the managing director of the Helios Kliniken Munich-West and Perlach, he also knows the region very well. In addition, the colleague was a member of the Supervisory Board of Amper Kliniken AG for a good three years, so that many important structures and people are already known to him.

The past few weeks have been one of the most labor-intensive of your two-year engagement in Dachau. How did you experience the past days?

Indeed, those were challenging weeks. Above all, the priorities have completely changed in a very short time. We were not able to pursue some strategic issues, such as the expansion of the Amper Clinic in Indersdorf, with the attention we had planned. I very much regret that. At the same time, I am amazed at how quickly a crisis management team has been found that openly and constructively bundles ideas for overcoming the challenges of the corona pandemic, brings about decisions and quickly implements them.

When you started working in Dachau, you had to fight two things. The Dachau hospital was heavily criticized for understaffing and numerous hygiene scandals. And the call preceded you personally, let's say cautiously, not being easy to deal with. How did you deal with all of this?

I have always tried to approach people openly within the two clinics and also outside, to understand their perspectives and to get an idea. I then reflected my perceptions and ideas with various colleagues such as the medical director or nursing director and with committees such as the works council, the chief physician and the ward manager conference. Then we started working on the topics step by step - in other words, in a very pragmatic way.

Extension of the operating theater, conversion of floors five and six in the ward block, planning for the new neurosurgery department. How did you experience these modernizations?

The rough plan for the structural development was already in place. The concrete implementation was prepared in various working groups. We have tried to involve the respective employees as experts and affected parties in the planning. It was very enriching because we got to know other perspectives - even if this procedure was sometimes exhausting for everyone involved.

Please complete the sentence: With Amper-Kliniken Dachau you are leaving a house that ...

offers excellent medical and nursing care.

You switch to the Catholic youth welfare of the diocese Augsburg as board member for medicine. What kind of job is waiting for you in the Fuggerstadt?

At Catholic Youth Welfare, I am directly responsible for several clinics. As a board member, I have shared responsibility for over 70 social enterprises in Bavaria. I have only limited experience beyond the clinics. I am all the more looking forward to broadening my horizons.
