Because of the corona pandemic, there will probably be significantly lower tax revenue in the municipalities this year. Erding Jetzt and Greens now want to tip the town hall tunnel.

Erding - Nobody can yet estimate the economic consequences of the corona crisis. It is foreseeable, however, that municipal tax revenues will also be significantly lower this year. Cities and municipalities will have to make do with much less money. The first factions are already advising drastic austerity measures.

So the Erding Now group ventured out of cover. Against this background, parliamentary group spokesman Hans Egger suggests that the town hall tunnel under Landshuter Straße, which is highly controversial among the population, not be built. The costs of "probably not less than a million euros" should be saved better. “Both the massive negative public opinion, the change in values during this time, but also the consideration of moods and the economic situation of retailers and restaurants in particular should make us rethink this decision, which can still be withdrawn. "

Greens were always against the tunnel

Egger demands that the topic be discussed in today's city council meeting from 5.45 p.m. in the Altenerdinger Semptsporthalle. "A short-term decision in this matter will be necessary because the construction will take place in the next few weeks," said Egger.

He gets support from the Greens. Helga Stieglmeier recalls that her faction was always against the tunnel. “We have a clear position right from the start, which we also expressed in the meetings. We have always voted accordingly and brought the request up again for the budget debate. Unfortunately, we were always in the minority with our position. It would have been good if Erding Now's change of heart came earlier, ”said the Green Circle chairwoman. The view from Erding Stieglmeier now considers the town hall tunnel to be too narrow. "Due to the possible effects of the Corona crisis on tax revenues, we have to take a full look at our planned projects."

SPD: application is "pure populism"

The SPD does not want to shake the tunnel. The group's spokesman, Horst Schmidt, describes the proposal as "pure populism". The project had been discussed several times in the city council and "had been decided by a large majority". Schmidt sees no new arguments - with the exception of the supposed mood among the citizens and the Covid 19 pandemic and its possible consequences. The representatives of the pro-tunnel parties won over 70 percent of the votes in the mayor election. Schmidt also believes that there are more important issues in Corona times, such as whether city council meetings are currently responsible.

FW parliamentary group spokeswoman Petra Bauernfeind reports: "The current status of my group is not to unravel the subject of tunnels again." But she admits: "Corona control has taken on a completely different dimension since then." Her group discussed this on Monday evening.

Mayor Max Gotz (CSU) also wants to stick to the course. The corona crisis is further evidence of the need to connect. "This is how we can effectively protect the administration in two buildings." Gotz says: "I was expecting such a debate."
