Should we behave as if we were all infected? 4:29

(CNN) - Michelle Bennett did not believe she could say goodbye to her mother before the woman died.

Like many families across the country, at this time, Bennett was told that he could not be close to his mother, Carolann Christine Gann, who had contracted the new coronavirus and was nearing the end of her life.

Carolann Christine Gann, 75 years old.

"Not being able to be there and take my mother's hand, rub her head, tell her the things I wanted to say. It was a feeling of helplessness, I can remember the days when I felt so frustrated and helpless and not being able to talk to her because I was not conscious during that time, "Bennett told CNN on Monday.

But a nurse at Swedish Issaquah Hospital in Washington state was in charge of making sure Bennett was fired. Bennett told CNN that the nurse called her from her personal cell phone and told her that her mother's breathing was changing and that she probably wouldn't live much longer.

"I'm going to put the phone on her face so you can tell her you love her and say goodbye," Bennett said the nurse told her. "She will not be alone, we will stay with her until the end."

Ten minutes later, Bennett said he was speaking to his dying mother on FaceTime.

"I love you very much," Bennett told her mother, adding that the two had recently discussed the tests that each mother-daughter relationship goes through and that she never even told her mother that she forgave her.

"I forgive you mom, I love you. I know I didn't have a chance to say it, ”said Bennett.

He admitted that it was difficult to express his feelings when he wasn't actually there, but he hopes his mother heard his last words.

"Mom, it's okay to go. It's okay to leave now. "

In an hour Bennett said he was gone.

According to her, she saw that the nurse was crying when she took the phone from her.

"I know how difficult it is for them," he said. “I can't imagine being on the front lines of that and having to go home every day and risk getting the infection, but then have the compassion and empathy to be there right now like it's her own mother. That's one of the most incredible things I've ever experienced. "
