Coronavirus: more than 20,000 cases reported in Latin America

2020-04-01T18:27:26.855Z

Latin America and the Caribbean crossed the threshold of 20,000 reported cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday, according to a count compiled by AFP based on information provided by governments and the World Health Organization (WHO).

At 4.30 p.m. GMT on Wednesday, the number of reported cases was 20,081 and the death toll stood at 537. The country most affected is Brazil, with 5,717 cases including 201 deaths, followed by Ecuador (2,748, 93) and the Dominican Republic (1,284,57).

This number of diagnosed cases, however, only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections, with a large number of countries now testing only those cases requiring hospital care.
