Ecuador's challenges in the face of the pandemic 14:49

(CNN Spanish) - Given the accelerated increase in the number of deaths in Guayaquil during the coronavirus health crisis, the government of Ecuador announced the construction of a cemetery to decongest the morgues and hospitals where deaths have been reported in recent days.

With this, he says he will prevent funeral services from overflowing further.

This Monday, President Lenín Moreno announced on his Twitter account the order to create a "Joint Task Force" for the "dignified burial of the deceased."

Jorge Wated, an official in charge of the construction of the cemetery, affirmed this Tuesday that "mass graves are not built," and that they will continue to remove the bodies of the deceased in homes to give them "Christian burial in one-person land."

Wated's clarification comes days after several Ecuadorian media will report that the construction of a mass grave was being planned in Guayaquil.

The cemetery is being built on land with the support of the private company, according to Wated. In addition, he informed that it will not only serve for those deceased by coronavirus, but also for those with presumption of covid-19 or any other cause. In this sense, the official acknowledged that there is a "collapse" in the city of Guayaquil.

The Emergency Operations Committee authorized the operation of funeral homes at all times, even during curfew without the need for a safe-conduct, with the aim of decongesting these services. In addition, more doctors will be incorporated to issue death certificates.

The province of Guayas has the highest number of infected and dead by coronavirus in the country. Its capital, Guayaquil, has 70% of covid-19 cases in all of Ecuador, according to the Emergency Operations Committee.

As of this Tuesday, the government released a parallel registry of deaths "probable by covid-19" within this health emergency. An additional report to the confirmed cases, which as of Tuesday stands at 2,302 infected and 79 dead.

Editor's Note: On March 26, CNN reported that the construction of a mass grave was planned in Guayaquil in the context of the health crisis caused by the coronavirus. The government has clarified that this will not be the case.
