Burkinabe President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré pardoned 1,207 detainees to curb the spread of the coronavirus in this poor country in West Africa, which recorded 288 cases and 16 deaths. " This remission of sentence concerns 1,207 people who will be supported for their social reintegration, " said Minister of Communication Remis Fulgance Dandjinou, during a press briefing.

" The beneficiaries were chosen based on their advanced age, their state of health and the completion of half their sentence, " he said, stressing that none convicted of " acts of organized crime, excision or terrorism ”had not been released. Burkina Faso, which had 7,621 detainees in its various remand centers, had already suspended visits to detainees.

Since the detection of the first two cases on March 9, the country has recorded 288 confirmed cases and 16 deaths. About fifty people were declared cured. Authorities have imposed a nationwide curfew while a dozen cities with at least one case have been quarantined.

A state of health emergency has been declared, gatherings of more than fifty people banned, borders closed, as are markets, schools and places of worship.
