The platform would work on a new service called Shorts, which would make it possible to create very short videos with the catalog of music of YouTube.

It's YouTube's turn to prepare its clone of the Chinese TikTok application. According to sources from the American site The Information, the video platform is actively working on a new service called Shorts. Integrated into the YouTube app, Shorts would allow you to post videos of less than 15 seconds. The user will be able to draw from a library of sounds and music from the wide catalog of YouTube, which has signed numerous license agreements with record companies, to enhance his creations. The release of Shorts is scheduled for the end of 2020.

The American channel NBC News confirms this information. One of his journalists, Dylan Byers, also reported having recently recorded a podcast with Susan Wojcicki. In this interview which will soon be online, the boss of YouTube talks about this foray into short videos. "The videos are very, very short, about 15 seconds ... this is something worth exploring, and we have to think about," she says. “We have already introduced Stories in YouTube and our creators are very involved. We will continue to innovate in all types of video format, including very short videos. ”

Integrating Shorts within the YouTube application will take advantage of the striking power of the latter in order to quickly popularize this function. YouTube is used by two billion people every month.

Similar functions at Instagram

The growing popularity of TikTok among young people cannot leave the web giants indifferent. With its short humorous videos and its "challenges", the Chinese application has attracted 800 million monthly active users, half of which are in China. In the United States, TikTok has been in the top 3 most downloaded apps for iPhone for several months. France is not to be outdone. According to Médiamétrie, the service had 1.5 million daily users in October. Almost 80% of them are under 25 years of age. And 12% of 11-14 year olds connect to it every day.

The Facebook group has already attempted to respond to TikTok. At the end of 2018, the American social network released the Lasso application, a failure. It is now Instagram's turn to launch into the arena. Tested since November 2019 in Brazil, Reels is a new feature integrated into Instagram Stories. Again, this is a function for creating short music videos, with access to a song catalog and editing tools. The best “Reels” are displayed in the “Explore” tab of the application. But Instagram believes that this service is not a TikTok clone. “No two products are the same. Sharing videos with music is a pretty universal idea and we think everyone could be interested, ” said product manager Robby Stein.
