(CNN) - A good Samaritan decided to use the $ 900 he had saved to do something good for Detroit nurses on the front lines of the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

Allen Marshall spent Wednesday and Thursday at an Exxon station near the Detroit Medical Center with a sign saying "FREE GASOLINE FOR NURSES."

"I just love them and I want them to know that," she told CNN affiliate WDIV.

Michigan is one of the states most affected by coronavirus, according to Johns Hopkins University, with 10,791 cases and 417 deaths.

Imran Al Samet works at the station and told CNN that Marshall had bought gasoline for 50 to 80 people on Wednesday and Thursday morning.

"A lot is happening," he said Thursday at 11 am

Most nurses don't come into the store, so they haven't heard their reactions, but people were excited.

"They are happy with that," he said.

Marshall told The Detroit Free Press that he had saved money to buy a knife sharpening tool. His wife is an essential worker at Blue Cross Blue Shield, the newspaper reported.

"Oh my gosh, that's very nice of you," an unidentified nurse told WDIV. "That is very good. God bless you".

When the money ran out, Marshall turned his sign that said, "THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO!" And he made a gesture of thanks to the rescuers and essential workers who passed.

A woman identified only as Alana told WDIV that she heard about Marshall's good deed and decided to come help him. She said that her niece is a nurse.

“It just kills me every day knowing that he is going to work. I don't know if he could get sick or what will happen to him, ”he said. "They are heroes and we must do what we can to support them."

He bought gasoline worth $ 200 and can even be seen through the video WDIV, a CNN affiliate that puts it in the cars of some of the nurses.
