A new herb book is designed to make you want to cook with ingredients from nature. One of the authors is Aki Schwarzenberger from Lenggries. The book stands out from other books in many ways.

Lenggries / Munich - They call themselves "the herbal collective": eight women who have a great deal of herbal knowledge and pass on their experiences on guided tours or even on television. One of them is Aki Schwarzenberger (67) from Lenggries, who after her time as a filmmaker at Bayerischer Rundfunk concentrates entirely on this topic. Schwarzenberger is also active for the "Herbal Experience Region Tölzer Land" and takes tours.

In recent years, she has been part of a network in Munich around Monika Engelmann, which regularly gives herbal tips in the well-known BR program “We in Bavaria”. A group of friends was formed from this group, in which the idea for a book grew. "At the beginning we were concerned because we didn't want to bring the 150,000th herb book to the market," reports Schwarzenberger with a smile on the phone. "We therefore wanted the book to be absolutely different from others."

The author often gave herbal tips in a well-known BR program

And they succeeded. About four years ago, when the idea came up, they had no idea that they would actually find such a publisher with the “Löwenzahn” publishing house from Innsbruck. The book, which has been on the market since March, is entitled "Twelve untamed plants for life". The women decided to portray only twelve wild plants, which they define as their VIPs (“very important plants”): these are nettle, lady's mantle, Giersch, Gundermann, black elder, cornelian cherry, dandelion, rose , Yarrow, sloe, ribwort and chickweed. A chapter is dedicated to each plant. First it is introduced, then there are recipes. In between there are portraits of the authors with many photos.

The book has been published by Löwenzahn Verlag.

The unusual are presentation, layout and language. "These were all guidelines from the publisher, and it was a lot of work," reports Schwarzenberger. So it was desired that the reader should be addressed directly in the info texts, and each plant is presented in the first person form. The texts are short and concise, the information is divided into short paragraphs and boxes. The optics invite you to linger and leaf through them. The short texts benefit the transfer of knowledge.

The book manages the balancing act by addressing readers who only want to spend little time in the kitchen with simple recipes, and at the same time also presenting more elaborate recipes for passionate cooks. The authors were asked to find a creative title for each of their recipes. "Mei, what were we discussing there," says Schwarzenberger. As a reader, you smile as you leaf through the pages: there is, for example, a "Frauentrost-Quiche" (lady's-coat-fig-quiche), a "Frau-Holle-Riegel" (energy bar with elder), a "fruity-spicy Dirndl-Jodler" (cornel cherry liqueur with chilli) and "Venus eggs" (filled eggs with wild herbs and yarrow).

Cooking recipes and tips for natural cosmetics

There is also something for fans of natural cosmetics: Instructions for hand ointments, foot baths or rose petal deodorant are described in detail. Finally, there are tips for harvesting, canning, drying and preserving.

The photos were taken for six days in Monika Engelmann's "herb shop" in Sulzemoos. The authors cooked and served all the recipes themselves - in contrast to other books, where specialists help out. "Green makes you happy" is the philosophy of the women's wreath. Even if there is hard work behind the women - apart from Schwarzenberger they come from the greater Munich area - "we never wanted to give up," says the Lenggrieser. "We were always full of optimism."

The authors now only thwarted the Corona crisis. Schwarzenberger had already prepared a book presentation in Bad Tölz, but nothing will come of it for now. The Lenggries woman now finds relaxation from all the hustle and bustle in the garden, where she is already gathering greed and wild garlic these days. "Now they taste best because they still have all their strength." Their tip: "Chop them and sprinkle them like chives over bread or over a salad."
