This new record brings the total number of deaths to 4,313 victims on British soil, according to the public health service of England. Among these deaths recorded in hospitals, 637 patients aged 5 to 104 years died in England. Forty of them (aged 48 to 93) had no other known health problem.
The family of the deceased child did not want him to be identified. It is still unknown if he had a risk profile. So far, the youngest victim identified in the UK has been a 13-year-old adolescent with no underlying pathology.
A tiny minority of critical cases
Minors, as susceptible to infection as adults, represent a tiny minority of the severe forms of the virus. According to data from Santé Publique France at the end of March, the under-15s accounted for only 2% of hospitalizations for suspected contamination.
In the United States, two babies, one of whom was six weeks old, died of Covid-19 infection. In France, the youngest known victim of the coronavirus is Julie, a 16-year-old girl from Essonne.
Complications in young people “occur from time to time for multiple reasons. We see it in particular in certain viral infections (with) extremely severe exceptional forms ”, recalled then the Director General of Health, Professor Jérôme Salomon.
