This is how deforestation works in the indoor forest

The second week of precipitation in Miesbach is over, and the Landesanstalt für Landwirtschaft (LfL) in Freising is satisfied.

The second week of precipitation in Miesbach is over, and the Landesanstalt für Landwirtschaft (LfL) in Freising is satisfied.

The fight against the Asian longhorn beetle (ALB) is going ahead. "Thanks to the optimal weather so far and the good cooperation of all those involved, the precipitation went smoothly in the second week as well," says ALB press officer Elke Zahner-Meike. On Friday, the area around the Riviera, Harztalstraße and Bayrischzeller Straße was felled - and as reported since Wednesday in the indoor forest at the foot of the Harzberg.

With tree climbers in the indoor forest

There, LfL does not hold the booklet as in the settlement area, but - as usual with forests - the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forestry (AELF) in Holzkirchen. And unlike in the settlement area, things didn't go so quickly there. "This is a different situation in the forest," explains forest division manager Christian Webert. "Especially at the beginning, it is difficult when there is still no space." The more trees are taken out, the easier it will be.

3000 square meter area

The trees are removed with a tractor. Some tree climbers cut individual branches beforehand. The strains are then collected in Fritz-Freund-Park, where they are searched for beetle larvae by experts and search dogs before they are chopped and transported for burning.

Never enter the restricted area

AELF blocked the cleared area with a tape - for security reasons. Webert also points to this: “For security reasons, it is very important to us to observe the area closure. Unfortunately, not everyone adheres to it. ”Shortly after completing the work on Friday, he had to expel eight people - including children - from the area. His urgent appeal to neighbors and walkers: "Please pay attention to the barriers!"

Webert cannot say how many trees are to be removed from the slopes of the Harzberg. “In the forest, we don't count the trees, we talk about the area,” he explains. The area, which lies within the infestation zone and from which the possible host trees for the beetle must be removed as a precaution, covers 0.3 hectares. This is required by the EU implementing decision. 20 percent of this area has already been created.

The area belongs to the city of Miesbach and a private owner. While private individuals have no way to request exemptions from the precipitation, the city has this right. In the case of the indoor forest, that would have been of no use, as Webert says: "The exception relates more to the classic village linden tree."

This includes dialogues with critics

Nevertheless, the deputy AELF boss emphasized that the Harzberg: "Actually, the idea was to cut the entire slope. But we said that we want to do everything we can to maintain the upper slope. ”

There have of course also been encounters with Miesbachers who criticize the radical felling in the fight against the Asian longhorn beetle and demand an immediate stop, reports Webert: “That is quite normal. That was also done within a reasonable framework. We explained to people why we are doing this. ”And that it is no joy for the forest workers to cut down all these trees.

Webert does not consider the concern of the local residents in particular that the stability of the slope could suffer as a result of the precipitation: “We are leaving the roots behind. These are powerful root systems that remain in the soil and slowly rot there. ”This takes a good ten years. In the meantime, they want to plant new plants - preferably with a genus that is not on the list of potential ALB host plants.

The most important thing for Webert, however, is that no further larvae have been found in the precipitation in the indoor forest. This is good news because otherwise the infection zone could expand. Then the trees of the old and beautifully grown Fritz Freund Park on top of the Harzberg would be endangered.

Another suspect larva discovered

For this purpose, an ALB larva may have been found elsewhere - in the area of responsibility of the LfL, as reported by its press officer. "Another suspect was found on a field maple," says Zahner-Meike. "A wood sample from this tree was taken and is being examined in the laboratory." But even if this were an ALB-relevant find, it would have no influence on the size of the infection zone. The reason: The position of the affected tree is in the previous center at the tax office and therefore does not lead to an enlargement of the felling zone.

Precipitation will continue on Monday

This is exactly what happened in the south-eastern part of the infested zone earlier this week. Two larvae and eggs were found in a maple tree in the area of the Brecherspitz- / Harztalstrasse (we reported). This increases the infection zone in the direction of Stadlberg. However, the exact wrap has not yet been defined.

The felling work on the Harzberg will continue in the coming week. At the same time, the felling work in the settlement area of the LfL is expected to continue on the Riviera as well as on Zwergerweg and Harztalstraße.
