Applying sovereignty is critical, right now

2020-04-05T23:03:29.144Z

Brigadier General (res.) Amir Avivi

The State of Israel is at a historic junction. For the first time in years, the free world leader, the United States, is presenting a diplomatic plan under which Israel can, and should, apply its sovereignty to its eastern border - in the valley - and to settlement in Judea and Samaria.

This is a rare opportunity to set a permanent limit and strengthen Israel's long-term security. But unfortunately, those who are making the effort to prevent a critical move are in fact former senior security officials, who firmly state that "applying unilateral sovereignty will damage relations with Jordan and may collapse the PA." The champions of these fears arise every time the State of Israel faces a Zionist act. Those generals did not warn of danger when embarking on promiscuous withdrawal plans. In contrast, did our security deteriorate as we began sovereignty at the Golan Heights and Jerusalem? The answer is no. Alternatively, we all know what happened to our safety in the various setbacks.

It is important to say - Middle Eastern reality requires that sovereignty always be unilateral, as it was in the Golan Heights and Jerusalem. The claim that consensus is needed beyond that of the United States is an evasion of responsibility and disconnection from regional reality, which has proven countless times that there is no real partner in a political process.

Regarding Jordan, it is important to understand that the kingdom has a vested interest in Israel cutting back on it and the Palestinians, as its Bedouin minority rule may collapse in the face of Palestinian unrest. There is nothing more dangerous to the current government in Jordan than the connection to Judea and Samaria, and not to have the Palestinians in Judea and Samaria denied their Jordanian citizenship. And can Jordan afford to cancel the peace agreement? Unequivocally, no. Jordan depends on the agreement, more than Israel depends on the good will of the kingdom. This power relationship should be kept in mind - and even leveraged - as part of the strategic and political considerations for Israel's benefit.

As for the Palestinian Authority: "Bleaching Reality," applying Israeli civil law - instead of military law - will not change the reality of Palestinian life and will not change the fundamental interest of Palestinians to continue to cooperate with Israel; If not Mordechai's lover, then in light of their existential interests. In the days of Corona, this is true of two.

And by the way of the Corona virus: the crisis created by it only reinforces the urgent need for a defensible eastern border, which will ensure a cross between Israel and the turbulent Middle East. Countries like Jordan can easily degenerate into anarchy if the spread of the virus does not stop. This reality of instability requires a dramatic strengthening of the security infrastructure in the valley and the construction of a border fence that will prevent terrorist infiltration or other risk factors.
