The authorities are now waiting for this data "to be confirmed" before "thinking about phase 2" of the country's recovery plan.

We have to go back to March 19 to find a weaker balance sheet. The number of coronavirus deaths officially recorded in 24 hours in Italy (525) is the lowest in more than two weeks, according to the civil protection, this Sunday. This represents a drop of a quarter of deaths from the previous day, when there were 681 deaths.

Nearly 16,000 people died of Covid-19 in Italy, the most mourning country in the world, according to official figures. "The curve has started to descend," says the boss of the Higher Institute of Health, Silvio Brusaferro. The drop in the death toll "is very important," he said.

"Phase 2"

"If these data are confirmed, we will have to think about phase 2" of the plan to restart Italy, which provides for a resumption of part of the productive activity of the third European economy. This phase 2 has been described by the authorities as a period of "cohabitation" with the virus.

These results are "conquered day after day and it is important to maintain the measures that made the curve decrease," he specifies. For almost four weeks, the 60 million Italians have been subjected to a strict attack on their freedoms, with a ban on rallies, drastic limitation of travel and considerable slowdown in economic activity.

As a sign that the battle is not yet won, the Italian health services have counted nearly 3000 additional infected people in the last 24 hours.
