For many employees, home office means: working in the temporary. This can result in back pain and tired eyes. According to experts, however, permanent damage cannot be expected.

Berlin (dpa) - Entire staff are currently working in the home office because of Corona. Even if there is pain in some ergonomically questionable workplaces, experts give the all-clear.

"You don't have to be afraid of sustaining organic damage to your spine just because you don't have an ideal home office job in an absolutely exceptional situation," says Bernd Kladny, Deputy General Secretary of the German Society for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (DGOU) . Permanent damage to the eyes is also not to be expected, says Horst Helbig, an expert from the German Ophthalmological Society.

Instead of sitting at an ergonomic workstation as usual, some employees now have to make do with the kitchen table, children's desk or other temporary items as a desk. Even ironing boards now serve as workplaces. The chairs also often do not correspond to the recommended ideal.

But not only the unadjusted workplace is a problem. Especially in times of uncertainty, stress, worries and tension could cause increased pain, says Kladny. "Pain perception is a complex process. The social environment and the psyche also have a major impact on it," emphasizes the specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery.

In addition, unfavorable lighting conditions and distances to the screens are likely to increase the strain on the eyes of many people. "If you look very hard, you rarely blink your eyes. This makes your eyes drier," reports Horst Helbig, director of the clinic and polyclinic for ophthalmology at the Regensburg University Hospital. Dry, tired and red eyes are a problem with VDU work anyway. Under unfavorable conditions, it could get worse. However, Helbig assumes that a few weeks of homework "will not cause permanent damage to the eyes".

Wiebke Arps from the health management of Techniker Krankenkasse currently sees corona prevention as a priority: "Avoiding contacts and staying at home wherever possible is the order of the day to protect your own health and that of others as well as possible," emphasizes she. With a view to back pain, she recommends movement compensation. "There are many options that everyone can implement. Be it standing or walking on the phone or a conscious walk after work," says Arps. According to Kladny, so-called active sitting is also important, i.e. regular changes of position.
