Israel Arrests Palestinian Governor of Jerusalem

2020-04-05T14:54:29.264Z

Palestinian Governor of Jerusalem Adnane Gheith was arrested on Sunday for the seventh time in 18 months for " illegal " activities, according to Israeli police. Gheith, whose first arrest was in 2020, is accused by Israel of carrying out activities in Jerusalem on behalf of the Palestinian Authority, for which he is responsible.

Based in the West Bank, territory occupied by Israel, the Palestinian Authority has no power to act in Jerusalem, according to Israeli law. The Palestinian Governor of Jerusalem therefore has no authority over the city, but is a senior official in the Palestinian administration and his governorate includes part of the West Bank, a territory contiguous to Jerusalem.

He was arrested for activities carried out by his office to combat the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, said his lawyer Rami Othman, who did not detail the content of these activities.

In the West Bank, authorities have officially identified more than 200 cases of people infected with the new coronavirus, one of whom has died. On the Israeli side, more than 8,000 people were infected and 46 died, according to the official report of the Ministry of Health.

A rally by several Palestinian political groups in Jerusalem denounced Mr. Gheith's arrest, saying that he had ensured that Palestinians in the city had the equipment they needed to protect themselves from the virus.

A video circulating on social networks shows Mr. Gheith wearing protective gloves being escorted by police when he leaves his home in East Jerusalem.
