(CNN) - During the Palm Sunday mass celebrated in a deserted church, Pope Francis told young people not to fear risking their lives for others during the coronavirus pandemic.

Usually held outdoors in front of thousands of pilgrims, the pope only spoke in the presence of a handful of priests and nuns and a small choir, who kept a safe distance from each other.

“Look at the real heroes that come to light these days: They are not famous, rich, and successful people; rather they are those who are giving themselves to serve others, "he said.

"Feel called to put yourself at the forefront of the situation," added the pope. "Don't be afraid to dedicate your life to God and to others, it's worth it!"

The Palm Sunday mass inaugurates the beginning of Easter Week, the most important week of the Christian liturgical calendar that culminates in Easter, next Sunday, April 12.
