Oberbierbach - On May 19, 2019, a terrible gas explosion suddenly shattered the lives of the Humm family. Sandra Humm from Oberbierbach and her two sons Florian and Tobias have been fighting back to a reasonably normal life for almost a year. The willingness of citizens to help is enormous. The Humms want to thank you for that. And they report how they are doing today.
The Humms 2014 in Rettenbach im Allgäu fulfilled their dream of owning a home. This dream burst on Sunday, May 19, around 10 a.m. A huge gas explosion, which must have originated from a ring line in the residential area, caused the family's house to collapse to the ground.
Solidarity in the Allgäu and Erdinger Land
Father and husband Christian (42) and daughter Anna (7) lost their lives while fleeing outdoors. Mother Sandra (40) survived with severe burn injuries. The two sons Florian (9) and Tobias (6) were lucky, they were not at home at the time of the explosion, but on the playground opposite.
Since then, Sandra Humm and her sons have had to fight their way back into a new life. The solidarity of the people in the Allgäu, but especially in their old homeland in the Erdinger Land, was enormous. For the widowed mother, Easter is a good opportunity to thank you for all the support.

Many readers of the Heimatzeitung did not leave the fate of the Humms untouched. Numerous donations were made in favor of the family through the reader's aid organization "Licht in die Herzen". A number of associations and private citizens also contributed.
Sandra Humm's injuries: Rehabilitation still necessary
How is the mother and the two boys doing today? Sandra Humm was in the intensive care unit with her most serious burn injuries for almost ten weeks. This was followed by four and a half months of rehab. The explosion in the basement severely injured Sandra Humm's right arm, as well as her hand and fingers. “Long outpatient rehabilitation treatments are still needed to get the tendons fused to the muscles to some extent in motion again. After all, there are improvements, ”reports Anna Gfirtner.
The councilor and lay judge lives in the neighborhood and looks after the family from the start. "Physical fitness is also increasing more and more, their overall condition is stable." However, the psyche still needs help to be able to process what has been experienced.
Insurance issue not yet resolved
The two boys go to school, they live with their mom and grandparents and feel very comfortable there. Fortunately, Sandra Humm was able to take over her brother's apartment in the parents' house. "Of course there is still no furniture, but she enjoys her own four walls and can retreat if she feels like it or needs rest," says Gfirtner.
The question of guilt is still unresolved. The prosecution's investigation is ongoing. "This continues to be a permanent burden for the family," reports Gfirtner. Because it is not clear for so long which insurance pays for the damage. "Sandra Humm is negotiating with them and hopes that an agreement will be reached soon." But the top priority is: Mother and sons survived - and experienced a lot of solidarity.
