Have you ever thought about turning your love for your family into a career goal? Two IVE applied science graduates, Olivia and Dennis, took action and got inspiration from their families. From subject selection to employment, they adhered to their ideals and achieved career success.

Olivia, who works as a health consultant in a chain store, is currently working on a series of inspections and consultations for customers, analyzing the state and index of the body, supplemented by professional knowledge, and tailoring different nutritional supplement products for customers. Being able to do the work you love and maintain the health of your customers is all due to the decision to enter the university.

Nutritionist's dream begins with family

Olivia's outspoken interest in and pursuit of nutrition stems from the health problems of one of the family members, making her realize the importance of "nutrition knowledge". "In pursuit of a healthy life, diet and rest are particularly important, and nutrition knowledge plays a key role." Olivia therefore aims to become a nutritionist.

For Olivia, the IVE course is opening a door to her dream.

Accumulate experience by jumping out of the classroom

"The content of the IVE course covers not only the professional knowledge of nutrition, but also related areas such as Chinese medicine and food therapy. The course is both theory and practice, providing us with different practical opportunities." Olivia was arranged to participate in the nursing home when studying for the higher diploma. The "Recipe Reform" project uses "three low" (low sugar, low calorie, low fat) cooking methods to make recipes for the elderly to taste healthy and delicious food. Olivia also made self-made teaching content during internship to promote nutrition knowledge to local children and pregnant women. These practical experiences will help strengthen the training of soft skills such as communication and expression skills, and consolidate confidence in the future development of nutrition.

Connected to the overseas study path and completed one degree course in one year

After completing the IVE Higher Diploma program, Olivia went to the United Kingdom to study the Bachelor of Food and Nutrition Pathway Program, and was exempted from some credits to complete the degree program in one year. "In addition to teaching knowledge, the teachers of IVE let me lay a solid foundation for further study. I also analyzed the industry development prospects and employment opportunities with me. Thanks to the support and encouragement of the teachers, I seized the opportunity to study abroad." Apart from the journey, I was not busy with DSE candidates: "When choosing a subject, one should consider personal interests and abilities, and pay attention to the needs of society and the market to choose a subject that suits you."

Liu Xiaolan (Olivia)
• Health consultant for chain brand stores • Bachelor of Food and Nutrition, University of Ulster, UK
• Graduated from IVE Higher Diploma in Applied Nutrition

Determined to take the first step in the wind and rain

Similar to Olivia, Dennis also took the IVE Advanced Diploma in Biotechnology because of his family. With professional knowledge, he took care of sick family members and found career goals. "Recalling that I was admitted to a bachelor's degree program at a local university, but it was not a biotechnology I was interested in, so I decided to apply for an advanced diploma in IVE." Part of the reason for studying biotechnology is that unfortunately family members have cancer. I am eager to develop in the field of biotechnology and have the opportunity to contribute to the treatment of patients in the future.

Recalling that year, because of the missed day of course registration, Dennis only braved the bad weather of the No. 8 typhoon and ran to the IVE knock door to show his sincerity by action, and finally was accepted to take the first step of career development.

Leverage your interest in learning

Dennis cherishes hard-won opportunities. With his own efforts and the recommendation of IVE teachers, he got an internship opportunity at the University Research Center. "By collecting different soil samples during internship to find fungi suitable for cultivation in high temperature, it can improve the efficiency of food waste decomposition and contribute to the environment." Mennis mentioned that during the internship experience that year, he was still very excited, because he could Experimental personnel from all over the world participate in the research and broaden the international horizon.

Dennis believes that the IVE curriculum emphasizes applied knowledge and practice, and the teaching and learning are very practical. "It's like constantly equipping you with everything so that you can develop your strength as soon as you graduate!"

Graduation to join a foreign university for a master's degree

After completing the Higher Diploma, Dennis was awarded a scholarship to study in the United Kingdom. He also completed a bachelor's degree with first-class honors and continued to work hard to earn a scholarship and pursue a master's degree. He laughed and said, "I didn't expect to go so far, everything was through the actual combat opportunities provided by IVE, and the experience I gained strengthened the foundation of my future studies." After graduation, Dennis started his career in the field of biotechnology. Engaged in research work at the Gene Research Center of the University of Hong Kong, through the analysis of different samples through experimental projects, such as avian influenza virus, cancer samples, etc., obtained great satisfaction in research work.
