Confinement: the French more than ever addicted to their smartphones

2020-04-07T04:48:47.362Z

Our new home life prompts unprecedented - but logical - consumption of these devices, according to an exclusive survey that we want

It is a small window of blue light to the outside world. The containment period, to fight against the Covid-19, has changed our consumption habits, especially digital. The smartphone has thus become a new everyday reflex: 62% of French people acknowledge that they consult it more than before, and almost half of them at least 3 hours a day, according to an Ifop * survey for the Chinese smartphone manufacturer OPPO.

Conducted during the second week of confinement, at the end of March, this opinion survey contains rich lessons on our new report to this device, with which 77% of French people are equipped.

Consumption is panicking like never before

All operating systems combined (iOS and Android), 31% of respondents spend a lot more time on their smartphones than before. 31% - again - spend just "a little more time" on it. It is therefore 62% of respondents who recognize greater use than before the Covid-19 crisis.

Note that a third of the respondents consider spending the same time there as before their isolation. More connected, 15 to 34 year olds are 75% who recognize that they devote themselves to it more.

“The smartphone has the function of remedying the unpleasant moments of everyday life: boredom, waiting or loneliness. He can only be our best containment companion! "Analyzes Stéphanie Bertholon, psychologist at the Center for the treatment of stress and anxiety (CTSA) in Lyon.

“He brings a lot of things in this period. However, it can also lead us to avoid situations and emotions that are sometimes painful, but fundamental for our psychic balance, ”underlines the specialist in cognitive and behavioral therapy.

According to the latest Baromobile study from Omnicom Media Direction, the French were connected last year on average 1 hour and 42 minutes on their phone. This figure is exploding today among French people at home: 45% of respondents claim to consume content on smartphones more than 3 hours per day, and 31% exceed 4 hours daily!

"Its current use is a transposition of our usual uses that we bring home, such as video aperitifs or discussions between colleagues that are now happening on applications," explains Catherine Lejealle, sociologist and teacher-researcher at ISC Paris.

"This entertainment toolbox generates little rituals, as could do before television, by creating breaks and meetings during the day," she says.

But confinement does not have the same effect on everyone: 20% of those polled say they spend less than an hour a day there. Conversely, among the youngest, 54% of respondents use it more than 4 hours a day.

"The new average usage did not surprise us, but it highlights the need for a good screen with a blue light filter for the eyes who will spend the day on it", points out David Chauvaud, head of marketing product at OPPO, the world's fifth largest smartphone manufacturer.

Popular communication applications

The top 3 of the most visited apps highlights the need to interact with the outside world through messaging applications (59%), e-mail (58%) and Internet browsing (56%).

"It is the revenge of the telephone call, which until then was perceived as disturbing and intrusive in our mobile life, but which becomes a welcome interruption in the daily life of a confined person," judges sociologist Catherine Lejealle.

The other applications testify to the need to have fun if you don't venture outside: 43% of those surveyed consult social networks. There is obviously an even greater interest among 62% of 15-34 year olds for Instagram, Snapchat and others.

23% of those surveyed also got into mobile games. It is, moreover, "gaming" that leads the dance among the new downloads made at the end of March by 40% of those polled. In fact, 30% of the recently downloaded apps are games, closely followed by the essential social networks (28%) and… sports applications for talking at home (24%).

Fewer videos than imagined

It is probably because they have access to other screens at home that the respondents are barely 8% watching movies and series in streaming on their smartphones.

A company phenomenon since the start of confinement, professional video calls in the context of teleworking or personal concerns only half of the respondents.

For example, only 7% use it for purely professional use. On the other hand, 32% made video calls to their family and friends with applications such as Zoom or WhatsApp.

"There will remain after the confinement of new links born of these exchanges with our friends and our families and new support networks created for example by sending funny videos to our smartphones", anticipates Catherine Lejealle, the sociologist specializing in digital .

* Responses collected online from March 25 to 27 from a national representative sample of 1,050 individuals aged 15 and over .
